This 1200 page-turner is guaranteed to make you take a trip down memory lane of past travels, but at the same time inspires you to seek new adventures in different parts of the country. The original version of this book is “1,000 Places to See in the World Before You Die.” While that version is a great concept, it would require a travel budget of epic proportions and endless amounts of time, which most people don’t have. What’s great about the US and Canada version is that it it’s much more accessible to everyone and has something to appeal to everyone regardless of age, demographic, cultural background because the book covers a variety of landscapes of North America. When flipping through the book, you might be surprised at locations featured that are within 50 miles from your home that you have never visited before. Or, if you are interested in traveling to a particular region of the country, this book gives you many ideas on landmarks that you can visit.
The book is divided into several categories, like active and adventure travel, culinary experiences, and great golf just to name a few of the sections. Each “place” includes a full description of the location and web links and phone #s to boot. The book features some very obvious destinations, like the Grand Tetons and major American cities but also highlights truly American experiences. For example, the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, which is a large structure covered with intricate murals made of ears of corn. It’s pretty cool, I must say and the highlight of my cross-country journey. Another interesting place in the book is the Maah Daah Hey Trail in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is a 96 mile hiking, horseback, and mountain bike trail that runs through the North Dakota Badlands. Here I though the Badlands only ran through South Dakota! Dining experiences can be a pivotal part in any vacation, and this book is filled with unique dining experiences. Chez Panisse located in Berkeley, CA, is a featured restaurant in the book, and it’s widely agreed that Chez Panisse was at the forefront of the organic food movement in the United States. If eating healthy and organic is important to you, then it would make sense to eat here at some point in your life, especially if you are in the area. If you are looking for the ultimate taco or ice cream stand in North America, this book has a few suggestions for you to test. This book will appeal to any American with a sense of adventure and who derives pleasure from crossing off items off a checklist!
