Free Things To Do in Amsterdam

Tulips in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, is known for its canals, tulips, paintings by Dutch masters, and coffee shops. The city is not generally known for its affordable prices. However, this historic Dutch city offers a number of free attractions, if you know where to look. Just a few are listed below:

Rikjsmuseum Gardens – The museum itself may charge admission, but not the gardens surrounding it. Pick up a free guide and explore the garden’s statuary, rose bushes, and architectural artifacts on your own.

Walking tour of the canals – Amsterdam’s canals have been inspiring writers, musicians and painters for centuries. In fact, there’s no better way to feel the pulse of this vibrant city than to stroll along these historic waterways.

Dutch Manege – Modeled after the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, the Royal Dutch Riding School, has been teaching students the fine points of dressage since 1882. Visitors can watch the practice sessions for free in the elegant balcony.

The IJ ferry – Most ferry rides are not cheap in Europe–except this one. The five-minute IJ (pronouced “eye”) ferry from central Amsterdam to the the old port area of Amsterdam provides an excellent view of the city’s waterfront.
