Wisconsin may not immediately strike you as a hotbed of Shakespearian activity, but one trip to the American Players Theatre will change your mind forever. This amphitheater is one of the two most popular outdoor classical theaters in the country. Located in Spring Green, Wisconsin, just off the beautiful Wisconsin River, the American Players Theatre is a thespian’s delight like no other. With 110 acres of rolling woods and meadows surrounding the cozy stage, audiences are transported to a time long ago when kings and queens ruled the day as tragedies and comedies unfold before your very eyes.

The troupe includes many seasoned and professional actors who each carry a laundry list of credits that include Broadway and the silver screen. And year after year the characters keep coming back to a place that serves Shakespeare like no other. Although Shakespeare is the staple of the summer season, other classics are sprinkled throughout so audiences can return again and again and always experience something new.

The plays are presented in a rotating repertory from Tuesday through Sunday, during the months of June through early October. Early birds can catch a Saturday matinee and all theatregoers are welcome to picnic on the grounds or purchase a gourmet dinner and a glass of wine through the Box Office.

Dress appropriately as the only shelter in the theater is the graceful branches of the woods overhead, the sun, moon and stars.
