Overseas travel can be scary: The language is different, the customs are different, and it’s hard to find your way around. But it’s just those differences that make travel so rewarding. So arm yourself with a little knowledge, a few words, and a good map and you’ll be at home no matter where you go.
Here are some of the things it’s wise to know before you travel overseas:
- Learn a few words of the local language: Learning the basic greetings, menu items, signs, and street sign terms will go a long way in helping you get around a foreign city. In addition, having a few local words at your disposal will show your hosts that you made the effort to learn a little of their language and will often go a long way in easing tensions between cultures.
- Research local customs: Customs and mores vary enormously around the world. Colors that are only used in mourning in one country are wedding colors in another. Such things as touching, handshakes, and comfortable space between casual friends or business associates also vary. Be sure to do your homework and avoid offending anyone.
- Study the map: Having a good, general idea of where you’ll be walking or driving helps you stay out of undesirable neighborhoods. Plus, you can’t always assume that you’ll be able to find someone who speaks English if you get lost.
- Check State Department advisories and CDC warnings: Take a look at the US State Department Web site and the US Center for Disease Control Site to see if there are any notifications or special precautions to take associated with the country you’ll be visiting. Forewarned is forearmed.
