If you have grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or children of your own coming home with souvenirs for everyone is not only expensive but difficult to pack. If this is problem you have here’s an idea to help you save money.
When you return from a foreign country keep some local currency and give it away as souvenirs. If you stick with coins it’s usually less expensive than paper currency. Many coins feature the the current or historically important leader from that countries past. Some countries feature local national landmarks. Some coins are pretty unique, for example Aruba has a square coin known as the yotin. You can combine these coins with postcards, local subways or bus schedules, and train tickets. Combine it with map of the country for a background and you’ve got a great scrapbook project. The coins can also be brought to school for show and tell days.
Sometimes older coins can even turn into collectors items. For example when many of the countries in Europe stopped using local currency and switched to the Euro the older coins instantly became collectors items. For example the drachma was the main unit of currency in Greece for thousands of years, today it’s no longer being minted.
