House-sitting used to be something you did for your aunt when she took a vacation in the summer while you were a college student. Now it’s becoming an accepted way to travel around the world without spending a fortune, and conversely a way to have someone take care of your pets and your house while you’re on vacation somewhere else.

At MindMyHouse.com people who want to be house-sitters pay a small annual fee of $20 to be registered and listed as available, a small price to pay if you get even one night’s accommodation. If you have a house that needs house-sitting, you can input its details for free. Having someone take care of your house has a lot of advantages over leaving it empty: Your garden gets watered, your pets don’t have to go into kennels or to relatives, and your empty house doesn’t become a target for burglars.

At the moment, MindMyHouse has nearly 7000 potential house-sitters registered, and the most common countries for house-sitting are the United States, United Kingdom and France.
