Traveling overseas offers experiences you just can’t find in your homeland, the historical buildings, mountains, rolling vistas and scenic towns. You’ll meet people you’d never encounter at home and get to taste foods that can delight your palate or even turn your stomach, but it’s all a priceless experience.
The problem is it can often be pricier than it’s worth. Obviously your local currency isn’t always accepted in foreign countries and constantly getting your money exchanged can be tedious and confusing. Not to mention all those spare foreign bills and coins you bring back that somehow never get spent. And adding insult to injury, many credit cards are now tacking on additional fees if you use your card abroad.
There are two solutions to most of your foreign currency problems. The first is getting a credit card that doesn’t tack on extra fees for charges made overseas and has no penalty for cash withdrawals in foreign countries. Read the small print and ask your card representatives specifically about their fees and get it in writing.
The second solution, which is almost essential for frequent flyers, is getting a bank that has a partnership with other financial institutions across the globe. These agreements between banks let customers withdraw money without facing additional fees. These institutions see you as one of their customers and are willing to give you the information and service you need, even when you’re far away from home.
