Shop Chinatown in San Francisco
November 9th, 2007
If bargains are your thing, head to San Francisco’s Chinatown, and put your negotiating skills to a test.
Chinatown encompasses Grant, Stockton, and Powell Street, but Grant is the main drag for shopping for souvenirs and home décor items. Steer clear of the gimmicky “Psycho-Ward-Alcatraz-Reject” t-shirt stands and focus on the stores. If you’re looking to spruce up a room, consider picking up a few silk slipcovers for $4.99 each at the Canton Bazaar. Similar slipcovers would retail at stores like Pottery Barn or Macy’s for 5 times the price!
If you’ve recently moved to a new home, or if you know someone that has, a pair of foo dogs is the perfect housewarming gift as they bring good luck and fortune to a new dwelling. The Tai Yick shop on Powell Street offers the best selection in the city and their prices are negotiable.
Remember, cash is king when you are buying, although plastic is widely accepted. And this is one of the last places in the US where bargaining is accepted and encouraged!
