A GPS Unit is Not a Luxury

Let’s face it if you’re on a budget, or just trying to get the most out of your travel dollars, a GPS unit can seem like a luxury. However there are quite few reasons you might want to rethink that position.

gps unitWhile the most expensive units will cost you $500 or more there are some good quality units in the $200-$300 price range. So why should you shell out $300 for a fancy digital road map? Have you ever been on a multi-day road trip with your spouse, significant other or friend. Dies your co-pilot/navigator have map reading skills left something to be desired? Maybe perhaps you made a wrong turn at the fork in the road, or were following a short cut one of your work buddies told you about. What happens, you end up stuck in a 4×4 box screaming at the person next to you because you’re lost, and don’t know how to get back. While no GPS unit is perfect, they are usually much better at reading a map than humans. So instead of spending your vacation being mad at your companion you get to actually enjoy your time together.

Look for a unit that has a large but not over-sized screen. You want something that’s easy to mount and take out, as they are a target for thieves in tourist areas. GPS units with voice commands are a little more expensive but usually worth it for ease of use and safety (they let you keep your eyes on the road). Lastly make sure your GPS unit can accept updates.
