Travel Tips: Saving Money on Car Rentals

August 7th, 2007

Some cities, such as New York and Boston are best navigated by public transportation or taxi, but much of the rest of the United States is all but inaccessible without a rental car. But how do you get a car without spending a fortune? Here are a few tips:

  1. Book early if possible. Just like airline seats and cruise cabins, the best prices (and most desirable cars) generally go to those who book well in advance of their departure. Check the Internet rates of major car rental companies. Unlike airline Internet specials, many of these rates may be booked in advance.
  2. Mention your Organizations. Many car rental companies offer discounts for members of AARP, AAA, the American Bar Association, and other national organizations. If you’re a member of a large organization, let the rental company know about it.
  3. Use an off-Airport Rental Company. Most airports charge a fee for car rental companies to operate a counter at the airport. Using an off-site company, one that uses a shuttle bus to get you to the counter, will generally save you money.
  4. Say “No” to the Insurance. Most people who rent a car are covered for rentals via their own car rental insurance policy or with coverage offered by their credit card company. Check with your insurance agent and/or credit card company before you travel, just to be sure.

Another tip:  book your hotel through Hotels Cheap to ensure the best available rates.
