Historic Delta Queen Prepares to Retire

The Delta Queen Steamship, the sternwheel steamship built in 1926 and listed as a U.S. historic landmark, has announced her retirement—in November of 2008. The gracious river boat, now owned by Majestic America Line cruises, plies America’s inland waterways, including the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Rivers.
The 176-passenger ship has a rich history. She saw service in World War II and she’s the only steamboat to transit the Panama Canal. She’s hosted three U.S. presidents, a princess, and countless movie stars and entertainers.
The interior of the Delta Queen is adorned with original Tiffany-style leaded glass windows, hardwood paneling, polished brass fittings, a dramatic Grand Staircase, and a 1897 vintage steam calliope.
Majestic has scheduled 24 sailings for the historic ship’s final season. Itineraries include three to eleven-night voyages and depart from Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans. Fares start at just $810 per person and include accommodations, all meals, entertainment on board, and transportation to and from the ship. Each voyage offers a number of sightseeing options, from tours of antebellum homes to a visit to one of Kentucky’s horse farms. For more information, see the Majestic America Line Web site.
