Harper’s Ferry

Harper’s Ferry

Harper’s Ferry. Surely you’ve heard of the town before, but it was probably last in your junior high school history class. Harper’s Ferry was the epicenter of many events significant to American history, most notably during the Civil War when it was the site of the largest surrender of Federal troops and John Brown’s attack on slavery.

Located in West Virginia, about an hour’s drive from Washington DC,  Harper’s Ferry offers an abundance of activities for the entire family. There are lots of museums and shops and the natural resources are incomparable. Harpers Ferry is nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains and is surrounded by the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

Within the National Park, there are hundreds of miles of trails with varying degrees of difficulty for hiking. Here you can see more than 170 bird species and 30 species of mammals, including the once endangered bald eagle. Another popular activity is bicycling along the C&O Trail, which is 184 miles in length.

The upcoming holiday season is the perfect time to visit as the town hosts a Christmas parade in the beginning of December and features Old Tyme Christmas, which reincarnates the Christmas of 1860. To check out upcoming events or to view accommodations, visit www.harpersferrywv.net.
