Cook-Off at the Daytona Bar-B-Que Festival

Do you reckon you’re a dab hand at the BBQ? You know, I’m from Australia where we like to think – although we know it’s not true – that we invented the BBQ. I just wish I could get down to Daytona Beach for the August 18-19 Daytona Bar-B-Que Cook-off & Music Festival.

daytona signLocal restaurants will be there, selling their best dishes in BBQ style, and musicians are booked to play non-stop during the festival. But I think the highlight will be the BBQ Cook-off, with teams competing for prizes of up to $1000 dollars, along with the prestige of being the Daytona Bar-B-Que Grand Champion.

I just love the rules for the great cook-off. Everyone has to turn in four different meats, staggered at every half hour over lunch time – the chicken starts it off at 12 noon. Those judges will sure have had enough to eat by the time the beef brisket arrives at 1.30pm. Points will be awarded according to flavor, taste, tenderness and texture, and there are a bunch of rules on cleanliness, hygiene and safety that must be followed to avoid disqualification.

If you get the chance to get to Daytona mid-August, then you can visit the festival for $10 a person (children under six are free). There’ll be plenty to eat, that’s for sure, and enough of that great BBQ aroma to make certain that you’re constantly hungry. Just check for me if there’s an Australian team – I’m sure they’ll be the Cook-off Champions!
