Hotel rates are on the rise within the U.S. and internationally. In 2006 international rates rose a whopping 8.5% and during the same period rates within the American border rose about 3% according to the American Express Business Travel Monitor.

If travel is on your agenda and you want to save money there are still some tricks of travel that will help you either keep that bill down or will give you some perks that make up for the added expense.

First of all, if you’re unhappy with the Internet rate then pick up the phone. You can often get better rates by dealing directly with the establishment as they’re allowed to deal and know what their occupancy actually is. Also, when you’re talking to someone on the phone, let them know you’re interested in getting the best deal that you can. Ask if they have any specials or promotions running. Then check if any of the clubs or groups you belong to offer discounts, such as AAA or AARP. If you’re feeling really gutsy, ask to talk to the manager to see what sort of rates he will give you.

Sometimes hotels just won’t budge on price, they know they can book the room so your dollar is easily replaced. So if you want to stay there and still want a deal, see if they’ll give you a room upgrade or ask to stay on the concierge floor. Both of those options give you little added benefits that can make your stay much more comfortable. In fact, the concierge floor typically offers enough snacks that you can save money by avoiding expensive restaurants once or even twice a day.

The real key to getting the best deal possible is being willing to ask for it.
