There are many different ways for a book group to plan a trip together, but one of the most overlooked ones is to head to a famous bookstore. From California up to Washington, the West Coast is dotted with bookstores that are destinations of their own for readers of all kinds. Here are the three that should catch your attention:
-
- San Francisco: This is a literary city with a strong tie to the Beat Generation. The bookstore that you’ll want to hit up here is City Lights, the famous shop started by Lawrence Ferlinghetti which gained recognition for publishing the banned book Howl. Take your group next door for a drink at Vesuvio’s to discuss the literature and history that you’ve immersed yourselves in.
- Portland: Walk into any bookstore in the country and ask the people working there where they would prefer to work if they could. The answer will be Powell’s in Portland. Anyone who loves books could spend weeks wandering around within this huge store where every person’s passions can be found in print.
- Seattle: When you think about “being literary,” do you think about open mic readings in brick-exposed historic buildings? If so, Elliott Bay is the historic West Coast location that your group will most enjoy.
