Paris’ historic sewers offer visitors the chance to check out the underground tunnels of the world’s first sewer system. The short tours are full of interesting facts, such as the tidbit about if you lined Paris’ sewers up end-to-end, they’d reach further than Istanbul.
If you’re touring Italy, schedule in some time to meet Otzi, the original ice man. At over 5,000 years old, Otzi was discovered in a glacier by some German tourist back in 1991. In addition to seeing Otzi himself, you’ll go on an audiovisual tour of the prehistoric period in which he lived.
In Eva, Portugal, you can visit a church decorated with 5,000 skulls and bones. Created by three monks, the unique decor was meant to help people meditate on the constant change of life and material objects.
