Child at airport

If you’re planning a family vacation but are a little worried about your child’s safety, here are a few steps you should take to reassure yourself and to guard your child against potential harm.

Keep them close: Child harnesses are frowned upon by some, but in a busy airport when you’re juggling a toddler and luggage and navigating crowds it’s a great way to keep your children close at hand. If you’re against the “leash” idea then consider getting an electronic alarm that sounds when your child has strayed too far from you.

The stranger talk: Sit down with your children and have an age-appropriate discussion about what a stranger is and how to respond to them. Make sure they know not to go anywhere with anyone they don’t know, especially on vacation.

Name, rank and serial number: Make sure your child knows his full name, his parent’s names, his phone number and address, including city and state. This may come in handy if you get separated.

A Meeting place: Establish a meeting place at every attraction you go to, in case you get separated. Also make sure your kids know where to go for help if they need it. It’s important to go through this information at every location and maybe even every day if you’re spending several days at the same park.

Dress wisely. Don’t dress your child in clothing that has her name printed on it. It’s easy for a stranger to convince your child that he knows the family if he knows the child’s name. Don’t give them that advantage.
