When you think of a weekend getaway destination for New Yorkers, the Hamptons usually comes to mind. Even though you are bound to run into a few celebrities, is it really worth shelling out $40 for a crab salad and thousands on a weekend rental? Coney Island is a pretty nice alternative and much more budget friendly.
Its located on the southern most tip of Brooklyn is just 45-minute subway ride from central Manhattan and on an idyllic 3-mile stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s best to stake a place in the beach early in the day as they quickly fill up with sunbathers and volleyball players. If you are seeking a bit more adventure, the Cyclone is not to be missed and is the number one attraction at Coney Island. It’s been hailed by many as the best wood roller coaster of all time and was added to the National Historic Landmark register in 1991. There are few more standard amusement park rides like Bumper Cars and the Tilt-a-Whirl, and there is a full-scale kiddie park that has an assortment of rides meant for younger riders. Admission to the beach, boardwalk, and park are free; however it costs between $2.50 and $5.50 to ride. The Cyclone will set you back $6 for the first ride, and $4 for the re-ride assuming that you didn’t get enough the first time! Going to the park Monday through Friday is the most budget friendly, especially if you want to make a day of riding the rides. For $23.99, from either 12-6pm or 4-10 pm you can ride unlimited rides (ok, only 4 rides on the Cyclone and 2 Bumper car sessions.)
