Honolulu

Honolulu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It’s also one of the most expensive in which to stay and dine. Sightseeing, however, needn’t use all your travel funds. There are a number of free things to do in and around the city.

Free Concerts at the Iolani Palace: The Iolani Palace, the last residence of the Hawaiian Royal family hosts the Royal Hawaiian Band each Friday from noon to 2 pm. Although touring the palace costs $20, listening to the concert in the courtyard is free.

The International Marketplace: Honolulu’s International Marketplace, in the heart of the city, sells craft items and wares representing the many nationalities that combined to populate Hawaii. It’s almost as much fun to browse as it is to buy.

Chinatown: Walk through Chinatown for a fascinating look at noodle factories, herbal shops, markets, and gift shops–or take a free, guided walking tour hosted by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

Hawaii State Art Museum: The Hawaii State Art Museum in Honolulu, opened in 2002. It’s one of the few art museums in the world dedicated exclusively to Hawaiian artists. The site is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm and admission is free.
