Dallas has a reputation for over-the-top extravagance, but the Texas city offers a surprising number of free attractions.
Outdoor sculpture tour: Downtown Dallas is dotted with more than 30 outdoor sculptures, dating from the 19th Century to the present. Stroll around the area and see how many you can find.
Historic West End: Dallas’ Historic West End, at Market and Munger streets downtown, is home to more than 50 specialty retail stores and restaurants in what was once a warehouse district. It’s an interesting place for a walk, and window-shopping is free.
Dallas Central Library: The facility, located at 1515 Young Street in downtown Dallas, houses an amazing collection of historic documents, including an original of the Declaration of Independence and Shakespeare’s first folio of Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 9pm, on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and on Sunday from 9am to 1pm.
African-American Museum: The African-American Museum in Dallas, located in the city’s Fair Park cultural district, features a variety of exhibits on African-American history and culture. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 5pm, on Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and on Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.
