London accommodations and restaurants may be on the pricey side, but the city boasts a large number of attractions that can be enjoyed without spending a dime. Here’s a sample:
The Tate Britain - Many of London’s museums are free to all, but the Tate’s collection is one of the best in the city. Dedicated to British art from 1500 to the present, the galleries feature works by Gainsborough, Hogarth, and J.M.W. Turner, among others. The Tate is located along the Thames.
Hyde Park - This centrally located green space is a must see for any visitor to London. Highlights include the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial; the Peter Pan Statue; and Speaker’s Corner, where anyone can wax poetic about his or her favorite cause.
Westminster Abbey - This Gothic Cathedral has been the coronation site of British monarchs since 1066. Many British monarchs, including Elizabeth I, are buried here, as are the poet, Chaucer and Mary Queen of Scots.
The British Museum - Britain’s Empire led to the collection of an astounding array of artifacts, statuary, documents and other historic memorabilia. Much of that is displayed at the British Museum, located in the north side of the city. The highlight, and the most controversial exhibit, is the Elgin Marbles, statues taken by Lord Elgin from the Acropolis in Athens.
