Belize, the former British Honduras, is located along the Caribbean Sea just south of Mexico. A former British colony, it is also the only English-speaking country in Central America.

What to Do in Belize

Belize has a lot to offer visitors. It has a stable government and economy, a relaxed island flavor, miles of relatively uncrowded beaches, and affordable accommodations. Belize is also known throughout the world for its excellent diving, snorkeling, and sports-fishing. History buffs will also enjoy the several Mayan archeological sites scattered throughout the Belize jungles.

How to Get There

Belize is easily accessible from all over the United States and Canada via daily non-stop flights from Houston, Miami, and Dallas. Residents of other cities can reach Belize City via flights connecting in those hubs. Airfare to Belize is generally very affordable when compared to other Caribbean destinations, with fares starting at around $395.

Where to Stay

The majority of accommodations on Belize are small collections of beachfront cottages. That’s not to say that they are not luxurious; some are quite elegant, if somewhat casual. The country also has several barrier islands that are home to self-contained resorts, such as Ambergris Caye. Among the best places to stay are:

  • Journey’s End Resort on Ambergris Caye
  • Tropical Paradise Hotel on Caye Caulker
  • Jaquar Reef Resort
  • Blancaneaux Lodge
