Exploring Old San Juan
Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan area is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Founded by the Spanish in 1521, the district was a major garrison and trade center in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Today, the district combines old world architecture and charm with vibrant nightclubs, casinos, and even outlet shopping. Whether you’re visiting before a cruise, for a weekend, or a week, there’s plenty of things to do in San Juan. Among the highlights are:
- El Morro — Jutting out into San Juan Harbor, this Spanish fort, built in 1540, was used continuously for over 200 years as one of the major defense posts in the Caribbean. Today, visitors can explore its maze of dungeons, barracks, turrets, and fortified walls.
- Catedrale de San Juan — This lovely 16th century church is one of the most popular attractions in the Old San Juan area. It’s noted for its original leaded glass windows and as the final resting place of explorer Ponce de Leon.
- El Convento — Once a convent and now a hotel and restaurant, El Convento is a great way to experience the architecture and style of Old San Juan. Have lunch in the open-air center courtyard.
- Outlet Stores — Tucked away among the tiny streets of Old San Juan are a myriad of outlet stores. Among these are Polo Ralph Lauren and Coach.
In addition, just strolling through this unique port city is fascinating. The narrow, cobblestone streets and ornate Spanish Colonial architecture lend charm and romance to the area.
San Juan, a major cruise port and airline hub, is easily reached from all over North America. Non-stop flights connect it to Miami, Atlanta, New York, and Chicago, among other cities.
