Autumn in Charlottesville
Charlottesville, Virginia, best known as home to the University of Virginia and the site of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, is a wonderful place to visit in fall. Charlottesville and surrounding Albemarle County offer visitors an array of changing leaves, historic homes to explore, and a variety of wineries to sample.
What to Do in Charlottesville
Architecture and history buffs will enjoy touring the University of Virginia, whose rotunda was designed by Thomas Jefferson, as well as Monticello and the homes of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe.
Nature lovers will find miles and miles of hiking trails at Shenandoah National Park. The park’s Skyline Drive is considered one of the most scenic drives in the country. And mid- to late-October is prime time in terms of fall foliage.
You can also check out any one of the 21 wineries on the Monticello Wine Trail. In addition, the town is full of interesting shops and antique stores.
If you Go
Charlottesville is an easy drive from Washington D.C., Richmond, and Baltimore. For those further away, Charlottesville has a small airport or you can fly into Richmond and drive about 1 1/2 hours.
Albemarle County is known for its many bed and breakfast inns, many of which are located in restored 18th and 19th century homes. In town, you’ll also find a variety of chain hotels.
