A Day Exploring Venice Beach, California

Holidaying in zip code 90291? Venice Beach is a Californian paradise, and although there are still canals that gave its copied name some credence, it’s not a gondola ride that you should head there for.

The great thing about Venice Beach is that you can spend a whole day just wandering around, and apart from the odd snack or drink, that makes it a cheap day out. As well as the beach itself, the Ocean Front Walk runs as the famous promenade along Venice Beach, which is one of the best people-watching spots I’ve ever come across. Get a sunny day and pretty much every kind of person you can imagine will be strolling along here, or performing some catchy street theater, or working at a stall selling something you probably don’t need, but can’t resist when the atmosphere is so good.

And then there’s Muscle Beach, long haunted by bodybuilders as famous as Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although it’s been moved from its original site, the new Muscle Beach complex has a giant barbell on the roof, so you can’t miss it, and there’s a tonne of fitness-related businesses around it.

If you want a great day out and to live the kind of cliche that often turns up as the background to bad karaoke videos, bring or rent some blades and skate up and down the promenade for the day. You’ll really feel you’re at Venice Beach.
