Denver, the “Mile-High” city, was recently named one of the top destinations for 2008 by Frommer’s. The city offers a winning mixture of modern and traditional, with frequent glimpses of its 19th century “wild west” past. Enjoying Denver doesn’t have to be expensive. The city and the surrounding area offer a number of free attractions.
Coors Brewery: The Coors Brewery, located 10 miles west of Denver in Golden, Colorado, offers free tours of their facility Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The tour includes a tram ride throughout the plant, followed by a walking tour of the fermentation kettles and the bottling area. The entire tour takes about 1 1/2 hours. After the tour, those over 21 are invited to partake in up to three samples of the company’s brews.
The Denver Mint: The Denver Mint, one of the six US Mint locations, has been making coins since 1863. Today, the facility creates over 32 million pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters each year. The Denver Mint, located at Delaware and Cherokee streets, offers free tours Monday through Friday from 8am to 2pm, except for legal holidays. Reservations are required and may be made via the Mint’s Web site. The tour takes approximately 20 minutes.
Red Rocks Park: Located about 15 minutes west of Denver, Red Rocks Park is a dramatic natural setting, dotted with 9,000-foot-high red rocks. The park is home to a popular amphitheater (not free), but it also boasts an interesting visitors center and miles of hiking trails, offering a new spectacular vista at every turn.
