Washington State is simply loaded with incredible things to see and do. Its breathtaking beauty is matched by its storied history and incredible sense of fun. Where else do you have ocean beaches, old-growth rainforests, two mountain ranges, a volcano, a secret underground city, tours of famous crime scenes, professional sports teams, and a space needle? Be sure to book a window seat, as you can get a sneak peak at much of these sights as you approach your landing at Sea-Tac Airport.

A trip to Seattle will turn anyone into a tourist as you rush from place to place trying to see all there is to see and do everything to you can. It seems as though each time you turn the corner there is something else to do in this fascinating city.

No trip to dowtown Seattle is complete without a look at what’s going on underground. Seattle actually used to be several feet below where the city rests now. For the best tour of the underground give Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour a try. This guided walking tour hits all the highlights and history. You’ll begin in a restored 1890’s saloon and will proceed through Pioneer Square and three different sections of the underground city. It’s a moderately rugged hike with some rough terrain and six flights of stairs so dress appropriately and don’t forget your camera.

As long as you’ve done the underground tour, why not take it to the extreme and hit the sky. Kenmore Air takes you up, up and away in a seaplane. Not only are the views stunning and the trip exciting, you get to travel in a noted plane. In 1967 deHavilland shut down production of its Beaver airplane so Kenmore took over rebuilding the planes and keeping the Beaver alive. If you’re an aviation enthusiast, ask for a trip through the hangar and check out all of the restored beauties. And not to be outdone by the airplanes, take a different view of Seattle from 1000 feet in the air.

If you’re not a huge fan of air travel, how about a boat trip on Argosy Cruises. Argosy offers a cruise for just about every personal taste and occasion. Dining cruises include all three meals of the day, traditional tours take you though some of the highlights of Seattle’s striking coast, theme cruises give you a little extra with your cruise like the very popular murder mystery or the laid back jazz nights, you can even charter the cruise for your own special celebration. View the Puget Sound region from the water on one of the Argosy Cruise ships.

One of the more interesting and unique tours in Seattle is the Private Eye Tours. Where you get a guided tour of the underside of the city (not to be confused with the underground). You can select one of three Private Eye Tours, or keep coming back and visit all of them. The Queen Anne Mystery and Murder Tour takes you to some of Seattle’s most grisly crime scenes. The Capitol Hill Mystery and Murder Tour takes another route through some of the more infamous but true stories of the city. Haunted Happenings: And finally, the Seattle Ghost Tour is exactly what it purports to be, a haunted look at the city of Seattle.

Olympic Sculpture Park is a relatively new sight to visit in Seattle. Construction began on the old industrial area in 1999 and wasn’t finished until 2007. The land has literally been transformed into nine acres green space punctuated by beautiful sculptures and a backdrop of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. This is the perfect spot to stop and enjoy a relaxing picnic.

Pioneer Square considers itself the cultural heartbeat of the Pacific Northwest but those who shop know it’s a haven for little boutique store fans. Spend a day exploring the crafty little stores and picking up one of a kind items you just can’t find anywhere else. Then stop in one of the incredible restaurants for the fresh catch of the day or another delectable delight. And finally, stay in Pioneer Square and enjoy the nightlife and live music.

A great double hit for Seattle is the Experience Music Project which is located in the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. The Experience Music Project is devoted to letting visitors get a hands on interactive experience with different types of instruments and different musical styles. There are also rare artifacts and memorabilia for the consummate music fan. And as long as you’re there, the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame is the world’s first museum dedicated to science fiction.

For an up close and personal look at Puget Sound at the Seattle Aquarium. The aquarium offers visitors a hands on experience with many of the local aquatic creatures and great information for everyone. The Seattle Aquarium is more than just a museum, its main goal is marine conservation and they work tirelessly to preserve the beauty and health of the Sound and to encourage others to work to save oceanic wildlife as well.

No list of sights to see in Seattle would be complete without mentioning the Space Needle. Originally the needle was created to be an entry in the 1962 World’s Fair and was privately funded with a mere $4.5 million. If you have the time, take a break and enjoy a meal in the SkyCity revolving restaurant. If you’re visiting Seattle during a snow, as long as the needle isn’t closed, make this the day to ride the Space Needle’s elevators. The elevators travel at 10 miles per hour, snowflakes fall at approximately three miles per hour, so from the elevator snow appears to be moving upward.

This list just barely touches the amount of exciting things there are to do in Seattle. It seems that on every block there is something new and exciting to see and do. If you want to save a few bucks and hit the most popular sites, pick up a Seattle Go Card which can save you up to 45% off regular admission prices on some of the best museums, tours and attractions that the city has to offer.

Fund these adventures with the savings on your Seattle hotel when booked here.

Niagara Falls, bordering Canada on one side with Horseshoe Falls and the U.S. with American Falls, is noted as a source of power to the practical of mind. But to the romantic, it has always been the ultimate honeymoon location. For the adventuresome such as Sam Patch and Annie Addison Taylor, it has been a source of daredevil fetes as they made their jumps and survived. For Hollywood, the falls have been a source of subject matter and background in such movies as Niagara with Marilyn Monroe and Superman II. Niagara Falls is a main attraction in itself, however there are many ways to see and experience these phenomenal cascading white waters.

Niagara Falls Visitors Center is the place to start while visiting the area. You’ll learn everything you ever wanted to know about the falls and then some. The visitors center also includes restaurants, gift shop and Adventure Theater. The Adventure Theater shows a 40 minute overview of the fall’s history, the daredevils, and other Niagara Park attractions.

Prospect Point Observation Tower is the fullest way to get a complete view of the American Falls. The deck of the tower reaches over the Niagara Gorge allowing you to see the falls below. At 282 feet it is constructed of steel, aluminum and glass with 3 glass elevators. Located in New York, it is open spring, summer and fall of every year. It’s a great vacation budget point at only a $1 entrance fee for children 6 or older and adults with children under 6, free.

Maid of the Mist boat ride loads at the base of the Prospect Point Observation Tower on the U.S. side of the falls. However, the ride is also available on the Canadian side. Starting the ride at a very calm location, the boat takes you past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then into the misty Horseshoe Falls curve. There are 7 Maid of the Mist boats numbered with Roman numerals and lastly The Little Maid which can be seen on the docks of Niagara River in Canada. This boat has had it’s Hollywood moments in Bruce Almighty and Superman II.

Cave of Winds Tour is for the adventuresome at heart. You will get wet. But, don’t worry they supply you with rain ponchos and sandals. First, you will start with an elevator ride that takes you deep into the Gorge. From there you trail your guide over wooden walkways to the Hurricane Deck which just happens to be 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls. While being completely sprayed with falls water you’ll get a chance to see the falls from a location others rarely do.

Niagara Scenic Trolley takes you on a ride exploring 6 of the state parks attractions. A guide will narrate informative Niagara Falls material during the 3 mile ride. The ride only takes a half hour and you are allowed to leave the trolley and explore at any of the 6 locations. The trolleys are part of the Niagara State Park “green” project as they run on natural gas which is environmentally friendly. The ride will only cost adults $2 and children over 6 $1.

Whirlpool Jetboat Tours will take you where no one else can, to the stone-walled canyon, the legendary whirlpool and the rough-riding rapids. The open-air boat will have water spraying you up and down while the closed Jetdome will keep you dry and comfortable. The boats run from April to October.

Niagara Falls Aquarium is located just outside Niagara Falls State Park. The aquarium features over 1,500 aquatic animals originating from the Great Lakes to the Corral Reef. The “Whaling Wall” is just outside of the aquarium and takes the visitor into a water dreamland. Open year round except Christmas and Thanksgiving there is a $9 fee for adults and $5 fee for children over the age of 6.

Old Fort Niagara is a national historic landmark located in New York. It features 18th century military collections along with living history events, programs and exhibits. It stands at the entrance to the Niagara River. The fort played an important role in the struggle over the Great Lakes by France, United States and Britain. This is a good family learning destination while enjoying the beauty of Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls State Park offers an abundance of outdoor activities. Biking, cross country skiing and fishing are just a sampling of the sporting fun at the oldest park in the United States. There are no shortage of walking and hiking trails with the most spectacular being the Niagara Gorge trail which will give it’s viewers the most spectacular views of the both the gorge and the falls.

Goat Island can be found in the middle of Niagara Falls, between Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. At the northern end of this green island a gangway takes you to smaller Luna Island. Goat Island is where the adventuresome trek of Cave of the Winds is located.

Sightseeing in Niagara Falls

Whether you are a bit more timid at heart or the true adventurer type, there’s something for everyone at Niagara Falls State Park. You may see the these magnificent falls as a border between the United States and Canada or you may see it as a binding power that connects us and draws us together. Both may be true, yet both countries work together to maintain and preserve the beauty that abounds there.

The closest airports to access Niagara Falls include Toronto’s Lester Pearson Airport on the Canadian side and Buffalo Airport on the U.S. side. Looking for great rates on hotel deals in Niagara, Toronto or Buffalo? Check out Hotels Cheap.

(cc: photo credit: j.o.h.n. walker)

Nashville history and landmarks entails more than just country music that goes back to the late 1700s. Although, it’s an important aspect to the city’s culture, and history, one that shouldn’t be overlooked when visiting, there are plenty of other landmarks to give you the full spectrum of downtown Nashville.

Tennessee State Capital houses the governor’s office and the Tennessee State Legislature. The architecture is modeled after Greek revival architecture and took fourteen years to construct, finished in 1859. When visiting the capital building you will see monument statues of Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, Alvin York as well as the tomb of James Polk. Touring admission is free during the hours of 9-4, Monday through Friday.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum preserves the history and educates the public of country music. This is their new $37,000,000 building, opened in 2001. The exterior of the building was designed to depict musical instruments. The windows look like piano keys, round discs around the tower look like CDs and records. You’ll see memorabilia, music clips, photos, biographies and more of your old country music favorites. Newest members inducted into the hall of fame are Tom T. Hall, Emmylou Harris, The Statler Brothers and Earnest V. “Pop” Stoneman.

Tennessee Tower (William T. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower), 452 feet and 31 floors, is probably best known for the building that displayed messages through it’s building lights. After a ten year silence, the word “Peace” was lit up at the end of 2007. Formerly, the building was used by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company and then by the National Life Center. Today the Tennessee Tower is populated by 1000 plus governmental employees.

Shelby Street Bridge crosses the Cumberland River. This truss bridge, opened in 1909, but today is one of the longest pedestrian bridge in the world at 3,150 feet. The bridge was admitted into the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Because of it’s historical landmark status it is often seen in country music videos. The Metropolitan Government of Nashville will rent you the bridge for special occasions.

The Travelers Rest Plantation and Museum was started in 1799 by Judge John Overton. However, it wasn’t completed until 50 years later. Included in the museum are period furniture as well as letters and records of the time. The oldest house in Nashville has special tours and events such as the Magnolia Lunch and Tour, The Last Campaign and special group tours for twelve or more participants.

The Hermitage was Andrew Jackson’s home, but has been open to the public as a museum since 1889. The historical value of the estate is depicted throughout the home that was passed down to Andrew Jackson’s adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr. and sold to the state of Tennessee when the son became embroiled in business debt. The museum is open through out the year at varying times with reduced hours during the seasonal months of January and February. Allow two hours to enjoy the full tour.

Parthenon, a full scale replica of the Athens Parthenon, was built in 1898. It was constructed as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It’s located just west of downtown Nashville and stands in the center of the Centennial Park, functioning as an art museum with work by 19th and 20th century artists. Many temporary exhibits and shows take place at additional gallery space. A 42 foot statue of Athena is the crowning glory of the building as it is in Athens.

Belle Meade Plantation lies just 6 miles west of Nashville. The 1853 Harding-Jackson family mansion sits on a 30 acre historic site. At it’s original size the farm spanned 5,400 acres boasting the title of one of the largest Nashville estates. Many famous race horses can trace their bloodline back to this famous horse farm. Events such as the Nashville Opera, Kentucky Derby Parties, horse races and holiday exhibitions and festivals all hale from Belle Meade Plantation.

Trail of Tears – Tennessee was the area Indians passed through during 1838 due to the Indian Removal Policy of 1825. Although 15,000 Cherokee protested and it went all the way to the Supreme Court with a victory to the Indians, the removal still took place. This is the path the Cherokee were forced to walk all the way to Okalahoma with many dieing along the way.

Grand Ole Opry had it’s humble beginnings as a barn dance in the fifth floor radio station of the American Life and Accident Insurance Company. It featured Dr. Humphrey Bate and his string quartet. As the radio show became more popular, the small studio couldn’t accommodate all the new fans and they moved many times to a larger building each time, finally ending up in it’s present location. Attending a performance at the Grand Ole Opry is a must to put on your schedule when visiting Nashville.

Nashville Public Library (main branch) is nirvana to any book lover. After you get over the wonderful parking garage, you’ll marvel at the beautiful building with marble stacks of books and the great kid’s section, including marionette shoes every Friday and Saturday. There are also great events and classes for all ages including book discussions and Baby and Me classes. Bring a deli lunch and enjoy the courtyard on the second level where you can eat and read. Residents of Nashville have been seen with the bumper sticker on their cars, “A city with a great library is a great city.”

Holly Street Fire Hall or Engine Co. 14 is a beautiful old building dated back to 1917. And, it’s still a full functioning fire stations. It’s a spot no history buff should go without seeing if you’re visiting Nashville. They recently went through an expensive refurbishing that was quite pricy, so it’s better than ever now. It’s in the Register of Historic Places.

Owl’s Hill Nature Center is a 160 acres of “green” sanctuary. The center dedicated to species protection, research, conservation and restoration. Public access is minimal, but well worth getting signed up for one of the tours. There are spring break activities and children’s summer camp which you can register for online where you can also find a virtual visit.

Speaking of landmarks, here’s your online landmark for cheap hotels in Nashville, or anywhere in else the world for that matter.

The Bay Area’s most famous buildings are a varied bunch, originating in several different epochs and representing wide-ranging theories on good design. The result of this range is an urban landscape that, while not necessarily cohesive, is undeniably unique. The following buildings are San Francisco’s most distinctive and recognizable, essential viewing for every curious visitor.

The Museum of Modern Art, SOMA

SF’s own MOMA is itself a work of modern art, designed in 1995 by Swiss architect Mario Botta. The museum’s collection, comprised solely of twentieth century artwork, includes pieces by Pollock, Klee, and Duchamp, among many others. To perfect the space, the museum’s backers are currently constructing a rooftop garden and outdoor gallery space, slated to open in 2009.

de Young Museum, Golden Gate Park

The de Young is one of Golden Gate Park’s strangest edifices, constructed with a façade of copper plates that will change color with exposure to the elements. The fine art museum gets its name from newspaper tycoon M.H. de Young and has existed in one form or another since 1895. Though its previous incarnations were damaged by earthquakes, the latest design incorporates ball-bearing sliding plates that allow the building to move with the fault lines to protect it from catastrophe.

Ferry Building, the Embarcadero

The Ferry Building’s iconic clock tower is visible from Market Street and the bay, and the building serves as a terminal for various commuter vessels. Modeled after Medieval Spanish architecture, it’s been around since 1898 and has survived several earthquakes with little damage. The surrounding Embarcadero is a popular waterfront shopping destination.

Parc Fifty Five Hotel, Union Square

Parc Fifty Five’s unique design includes a bay window in every guest room and panoramic city views of the hotel’s surroundings; it’s located in the middle of downtown, adjacent to both Union Square and Chinatown. Its terrace-like design means that many luxury rooms are walled almost entirely with windows, and its guests are treated to incredible views of the nighttime skyline and sunsets on the bay. With thoughtfully furnished rooms, enormous staircases, and several onsite restaurants, it’s one of San Francisco’s best-designed luxury hotels.

Transamerica Pyramid, Financial District

San Francisco’s most famous skyscraper occupies the former location of the Montgomery Block, a monolith that was hailed as fire- and earthquake-proof. Its 48 floors house office and retail space, as well as a remarkable 18 elevators. Its unique shape is due to SF zoning challenges; Transamerica’s architects wanted to maximize office space on a relatively small lot. It’s certainly the hallmark of the city’s skyline and is frequently utilized in films about the Bay Area.

San Francisco is a city with a lot of cultural and social significance for the state of California and the rest of the United States. Archeological evidence leads experts to believe that the region has been inhabited since 3000 BC and the Yelamu group of the Ohlone tribe were still in the region when the Spanish settled the region in 1776 and fort and mission. San Francisco didn’t really become a boomtown until almost 100 years later when the gold rush hit the region and altered the entire landscape of California. Rocked by a few devastating earthquakes, San Francisco has remarkably survived with literally thousands of historical landmarks, national, state and local.

Use the following list of historic landmarks in San Francisco to discover a few of the more popular landmarks for your next trip to the Bay Area.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island was originally home to the first lighthouse and U.S. fort on the west coast but its best known as being home to some of the most famous and infamous criminals in U.S. history. Alcatraz Island, affectionately known as The Rock, first transferred to a prison during its service as a military base, Civil War prisoners were held on the island and then Spanish-American war prisoners also served time on Alcatraz. During the 1906 earthquake civilian prisoners were transferred for their protection and soon the prison expanded. Some of the more noted inmates were Al Capone, the noted Birdman of Alcatraz, James “Whitey” Bulger and Alvin Karpis. In addition to the prison tours, starting from Fisherman’s Wharf, you can learn about Indians of All Tribes who twice “liberated” the island in an effort to establish tribal rights in the United States. But beyond all of the struggle and terror on the island there is an incredible beauty to this island with the natural rock gardens, tide pools and the bird colonies.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is known as one of the most beautiful suspension bridges in the world. Spanning the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean the 1.7 miles draws an estimated 9 million people annually and visitors can either drive, bike, or walk across the famed span. Construction on the bridge began in 1933 under the supervision of Joseph Strauss. Strauss had been working on the bridge, at least conceptually, since 1916. The bridge was finished in 1937 with an opening ceremony that lasted for an entire week. On an entirely different note, the Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular place to commit suicide in the United States and one of the most popular in the world. No accurate number of suicides is reported as many of these events aren’t witnessed but it 2005 it was estimated that there was one suicide or attempt every two weeks.

Fort Point

Fort Point has what is perhaps the best view of the Golden Gate Bridge as it was originally positioned to protect the harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. But Fort Point’s history reaches back to the first Spanish settlement in San Francisco in 1776 when a mission and presidio was built and the area where Fort Point now stands was fortified for protection. As the San Francisco harbor has been safe for some time the importance of Fort Point has diminished. It is now most famous for its view which can be seen on numerous films and it’s also made an appearance in the wildly popular computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Cable Car Barn

Think of San Francisco and images of cable cars winding up and down steep grades comes to mind. Learn more about San Francisco’s cable cars with a visit to the Cable Car Barn. The first cable car started in 1873 and rose in popularity until 1892 when the first electric streetcars started running. The earthquake of 1906 contributed to the downfall of the cable car and by 1944 only two lines existed. A few groups worked to restore and maintain the remaining lines and by 1984 several lines were running and restored. Now the cable cars serve mainly as a tourist experiences but some locals still use them in their regular commute. The Cable Car Barn lets you view an actual cable winding and watch the path as it enters the building and leaves underneath the street. The museum houses many great artifacts, including the first cable car from 1873.

Coit Tower

Coit Tower was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 as part of a bequeath from Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the city. The 210 foot reinforced concrete tower was built in an art deco style by Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard. Coit Tower houses murals by 26 different artists working under the Public Works of Art Project, the first New Deal federal employment program for artists. Most of the murals are open to the public without charge, but there is debate about whether there should be a fee. The spiral stairway and its murals are typically closed but if you come on a Saturday morning at 11:00 am you can join a free San Francisco City Guides tour and view these works or art along with an insightful tour.

Castro Camera

Not a national historic monument but a local one, Castro Camera has gained more fame and notoriety since the release of the Sean Penn film, Milk. This building served as both home and business for famed gay politician, Harvey Milk. The camera store was opened in 1972 as a business venture for Milk but the store became so much more as Milk began his bid for public office. Being an openly gay candidate during a time of sexual intolerance in the United States was controversial to say the least, but it also was unifying and brought the gay community together at Castro Camera where campaign headquarters strummed with the heartbeat of political change.

As previously mentioned, there are literally thousands of historic landmarks in San Francisco and it would be almost impossible to see all of them, but take advantage of as many of these important locations as possible and use the guide above to help you select a few of the more popular historic landmarks.

A trip to Los Angeles is an adventure that can come in many different flavors. You can take a scenic relaxing tour through the city, hitting the most laid back locales, or you can go the high adventure route and explore the most happening hot spots. Whatever your preference, Los Angeles is chock full of landmarks that are worthy of your attention.

Sit back and enjoy the sights with a tour of L.A. and the star’s homes. Los Angeles Sightseeing Tours is a great way to start your experience. Let these experienced and reliable tour guides take you through the highlights and give you insights that you’re not going to learn in the official tour books. Make note of the places you pass on your tour that spark your interest and return later to leisurely explore.

For the first time visitor a trip to Hollywood is almost a must. Here you can stroll the streets, do a little shopping, an check out restaurants and happening nightclubs, but probably the most famous part of Hollywood is the Hollywood Sign. The sign has come to mean more than the name of a town, it signifies a dream for many, and failed aspirations for others. Originally built in the 1920’s the sign first read HOLLYWOODLAND and was not meant as an homage to the city below but an advertisement for a real estate development. Over the years the sign has gone through many phases of vandalism and disrepair but now stands restored and revered as a symbol of hope for many fame-driven hopefuls.

And as long as you’re in the neighborhood, there are several other things worth taking note of in Hollywood, like the Walk of Fame. Since the first inscription of Joanne Woodward’s name on February 9th 1960, instant tradition began. Currently there are over 2000 people, animals fictional characters and some companies and buildings are honored on the approximately 3.5 mile walk. Nominations to be placed on the walk are submitted each May and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce makes the final decision on who will be honored and who will be forgotten.

While on your walk of the stars you’ll pass right by Grauman’s Chinese Theater, purportedly the most famous theater in the world. Originally established in 1927, the theater was the brainchild of Sid Grauman who knew how to create a spectacle. Rising 90 feet into the air, the roof commands attention of passersby. The exterior and the interior feature Chinese architecture and artifacts but the most noted feature is not Chinese at al. Grauman came up with the idea to have the stars put their handprints and foot prints in wet cement to immortalize them during publicized ceremonies in the Forecourt of the Stars. Pop culture historians will recognize Grauman’s Chinese Theater from its many appearances in film, television, video games, novels and songs.

Looking for a place to stay, how about the Roosevelt Hotel. Serving as host to such notable guests as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift the hotel continues to draw Hollywood’s brightest stars and visitors alike. Originally financed by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Louis B. Mayer in 1927, the Roosevelt was home to the first Academy Awards ceremony two years later. This Spanish Colonial Revival building was declared a landmark in August of 1991 and is still reportedly haunted by Monroe and Clift.

Another stop that draws hoards of people for different reasons is Griffith Observatory. The Observatory opened in 1935 and became an instant success. In addition to space and scientific exhibits there is a planetarium, the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon, Gottlieb Transit Corridor and the Samuel Oschin Planetarium Theater. If the science isn’t what drew you to the Griffith Observatory, maybe it’s the views. Located on the south facing slope of Mt. Hollywood, the observatory has spectacular views of the LA Basin, downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood an the Pacific Ocean. And if that doesn’t wow you then perhaps getting up close and personal with a location that has been featured in more than a dozen feature films including Rebel Without a Cause and The Terminator. It’s had a place of importance in just as many television series and pops up now and again in music videos, video games and comic books on occasion. If you still have time on your stop through Hollywood, be sure to visit the Wax Museum and the Kodak Theatre, or take your kids to visit Universal Studios.

For anyone with children a trip to the L.A. area isn’t complete without a stop at Disneyland Park. Walt Disney’s west side residence is actually the only theme park designed, built, opened and operated by the man himself. This adventure playland is the second most visited park in the world, second only to its eastside cousin, Disney World in Orlando, Florida. There is almost no end to the activities featured in Disneyland as guests can enjoy a variety of edible treats, thrill to spectacular theme rides, watch parades and fireworks, or sit and view a variety show or movie. And don’t forget about the shopping.

Another must see attraction is the famous Knott’s Berry Farm. If you find Disneyland a little tame, then you’ll love the rides at Knott’s Berry Farm, with over 165 world class rides and some really thrilling roller coasters. If you do have little ones along, be sure to make a stop at Camp Snoopy for rides specifically geared for the smaller set and themed fun. In addition, if the weather permits, the Wild Water Wilderness is a great stop for family fun and water themed rides. Check out their annual schedule as the farm hosts a number of exciting seasonal events.

If you seek these thrilling rides but your travels find your family north of LA, consider Six Flags Magic Mountain as an alternative to these amusement parks to the south.

And don’t leave the Los Angeles area without making a stop to the Santa Monica Pier. Whether you’re looking for a quiet stroll along the beach and a peaceful sunset or if you’re searching for more excitement, the Santa Monica Pier has it all. The pier offers dining, shopping, amusements rides at Pacific Park an attraction in itself, a 1922 carousel and interactive aquarium. And don’t forget the ocean. Take advantage of all that the Pacific Ocean has to offer with fishing, snorkeling, swimming, sandcastle building, sun bathing and of course surfing. In addition to the permanent fixtures at the Santa Monica Pier, there are the aforementioned sunsets, roaming performers and musicians and artists that make every visit to the pier a unique experience.

This California playland is accessible from several different airports, including the international LAX, Long Beach, Orange County and Burbank. Of course there are many places to stay, but if you’re in the market for a great hotel deal in LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, Newport Beach, Orange County or Anaheim, check out Hotels Cheap. Don’t miss out on the fun!

San Diego is a city that is just jam packed with things to see and do, in fact it would be almost impossible to do it all in one trip, so pick your favorites and then come back again and again for additional sightseeing vacations or to visit your old favorites repeatedly.

San Diego Zoo

Known by animal enthusiasts the world over, the San Diego Zoo is so much more than just a zoo. The zoologists at the San Diego Zoo work tirelessly to research rare animals and devise captive breeding programs that will help ensure the survival of some of these precious creatures. This zoo is designed more for the inhabitants than the guests so you’re not always guaranteed a glimpse of each captive critter. You also may get a little tired walking through the extensive park so, if you can, arrange to join one of the many tours the zoo offers. Tours at the zoo will make the trip less tiring as you can spend much of it on a bus, and you’ll glean more knowledge than you would fumbling through on your own.

SeaWorld San Diego

For more animal adventures, SeaWorld San Diego is an excellent way to spend a day. There is so much more at SeaWorld than aquatic animals, in addition to the exhibits and life animal shows there is a Sesame Street Imagination presentation, Shamu’s SkySplash fireworks, Cirque de la Mer and Riptide, an acrobatic and music production. For those seeking a little thrill with their wildlife, there are no less than eight amusement park type rides at SeaWorld. And, just in case you actually came for the sea life, check out all that SeaWorld San Diego has to offer: Shark Encounter, Wild Arctic, Rocky Point Preserve, Shamu Close Up, Penguin Encounter, Forbidden Reef, Manatee Rescue, California Tide Pool, Pacific Point, Freshwater Aquarium, Aquarium de la Mer, World of the Sea Aquarium and Flamingo Cove.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is more than just a park, it’s an experience and it’s a vacation in itself as there is enough to do at Balboa Park to keep you occupied for days if not weeks. Balboa Park is the nation’s largest urban cultural park with 15 major museums, performing arts venues, beautiful gardens and it actually houses the San Diego Zoo. The roster of performances and exhibits changes regularly so it’s important that you check your calendar and their schedule so you can take advantage of your favorite activities. If you’re thinking about spending a lot of time exploring the Balboa Park area then consider purchasing a Passport to Balboa Park, it’s an economical way to see 13 of the museums with a one-time purchase pass.

San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum/ USS Midway Museum

When the USS Midway took her final voyage into San Diego Bay to moor at the Embarcadero it became the world’s largest floating naval-aviation museum. The aircraft carrier spent an impressive 47 years in service from the tail end of WWII in 1945 until 1991. It patrolled the Taiwan Straits, the Tonkin Gulf, was a flagship in Desert Storm and evaluated 1,800 from Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. In its lifetime more than 225,000 people called the ship their home and work place. Tourists can take a self-guided audio tour which covers several levels of the ship, including the climb up to the bridge. But skip the self-guided tour if you happen to be lucky enough to arrive when there is a docent tour, many of these are given by Midway vets, a once in a lifetime experience to be sure.

San Diego Aerospace Museum

The San Diego Aerospace Museum’s main focus is on the history of flight, so if you’ve got any aviation buffs in the group then this is a must see attraction, but even if you’re not head over heals into things that fly, this museum is still and excellent distraction. The museum starts with a look at replica of the 1783 Montgolfier brothers’ hot air balloon, the first manned vehicle to rise above the earth, it continues through the storied history of man’s attempts to break free of the earth and soar into the heavens with an exhibit dedicated to space age technology. Pay attention to the traveling exhibits because they can be as exciting as the permanent ones.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

At Old Town San Diego State Historic Park you can learn more about the history of the area from 1821 to 1872. The converging Mexican and American cultures greatly influenced the growth of San Diego and can be seen and felt in the city outside the park. Restored buildings from this period form the centerpiece of The Historic Plaza. This old gathering place consists of five original adobe buildings which now house museums, retail shops and restaurants. In addition to the modern conveniences, you can see a working blacksmith’s shop, hear traditional music, and interact with costumed hosts as they go about the daily activities of the time.

Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines State Reserve is a remarkable look at how the land around San Diego once was before it was tamed and destroyed by city dwellers. More than 2000 acres of majestic Torrey pines and chaparral plants and unspoiled beaches remain largely untouched so you can enjoy the beauty that this region once was. If you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of some migrating sea birds who use the lagoon as a stopping point on their regular trips. There are eight miles of trails that you can explore on your own, or during the weekend you can join a guided tour to learn even more about the region and its natural wonders.

These are just a few of the sightseeing hotspots in San Diego. In addition to the sites listed above there is Cabrillo National Monument, Gaslamp Quarter, the Maritime Museum of San Diego, Coronado Island, Heritage Park Victorian Village, PetCo Park and many more exciting attractions all within a convenient distance from the San Diego Airport. Whether you want to learn more about the history of the area, the natural world around us, the incredible inventions of man or just explore and have fun, San Diego has everything you could ever want to see.

From Hitchcock’s sweeping masterpieces to George Lucas’ adolescent opus about this particular galaxy, these classic films utilize San Francisco’s splendor in ways that have inspired tourists for years. Use them as a guide to the city’s best sights and attractions.

Vertigo (1958)

The Movie: Jimmy Stewart plays a beleaguered San Francisco detective whose career is offset by severe acrophobia, the result of running around on rooftops:

Stewart’s Scottie takes a job to follow Madeline, a friend’s mysteriously possessed wife, on her excursions throughout the Bay Area. He winds up embroiled in a convoluted criminal plot, chasing his mark up the steps of the mission San Juan Bautista. She plummets, which really doesn’t help his vertigo. Madeline’s death and spectral presence become Scottie’s sole fixation, and the film only gets creepier after her demise.

The Sights: Fort Point at Golden Gate Park, where Scottie saves Madeline from drowning, is a popular vista of the Bridge and the Bay. Muir Woods provides San Francisco’s visitors with easy access to the Pacific’s impressive Redwoods, and the Mission San Juan Bautista is a popular stop for Hitchcock devotees and history buffs alike.

The Birds (1963)

The Movie: Tippi Hedren plays Melanie, an heiress who bonds with a guy named Mitch in a pet store over a pair of lovebirds. She makes a gift of the avian friends and delivers them to Mitch’s Bodega Bay home, only to be attacked by an errant gull on her way. As Mitch and Melanie become more involved, the bird attacks become more frequent and vicious. Eventually, they reach swarming and apocalyptic levels, as illustrated in the clip below:

The film’s inexplicable violence makes it a horror classic, and while its Pacific Coast setting makes for beautiful viewing, its viewer might wind up a bit wary of Bay Area birds.

The Sights: Bodega Bay, the small town where Mitch resides, is a celebrated local beach and an easy day trip from the city. San Francisco’s central hub, Union Square, also features prominently in the film.

The Graduate (1967)

The Movie: Ennui-laden Benjamin Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman, returns home to Pasadena after completing his Bachelor’s in the Northeast. He embarks on an affair with Anne Bancroft’s seductively talismanic Mrs. Robinson, only to fall for her daughter Elaine. When he confesses his dalliance with her mother, Elaine refuses any further contact with him. Until, that is, he road-trips to Berkeley to reconcile:

We all know how this one ends: Ben overcomes parental adversity to successfully stop Elaine’s quickie wedding and they ride away, a little confused, on a public bus.

The Sights: Benjamin meets Elaine at the Monkey House at the SF Zoo, one of the country’s most scenic zoological parks. Many of the Bay Area scenes take place at UC Berkeley’s campus, and one memorable moment features Benjamin’s drive over the oft-ignored Oakland Bay Bridge.

Dirty Harry (1971)

The Movie: “Dirty” Harry Callahan is a police inspector with a knack for delivering some of cinema’s most memorable lines:

When San Francisco is terrorized by a serial killer, it’s up to Clint Eastwood’s trigger-happy Callahan to enact justice on the baddie. What ensues is basically a battle of madness, Harry v. the maniacal Scorpio killer, through SF’s major parks, monuments, and recreation areas. It’s a strange premise, but Eastwood’s delivery sells it as a classic.

The Sights: The movie utilizes many popular Bay Area tourist spots as showdown sites, including San Francisco’s City Hall, the Potrero Hill neighborhood, Mount Davidson, and Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park.

Harold and Maude (1971)

The Movie: Melancholic teenager Harold, a wealthy Northern California kid who spends his time going to funerals and modding his sports car to look like a hearse, meets Maude, a lively septuagenarian who also enjoys going to funerals. Together they excavate Harold’s troubles, exploring his psyche whilst having adventures. Harold hopes to marry Maude, but she has alternate plans. For a better look, the following video claims to successfully condense the movie into a few meager seconds:

The movie has sparked mimicry, several theatrical productions, and a school of philosophy. It’s definitely a cult cinema classic.

The Sights: As the clip illustrates, the action reaches its zenith in the Sutro Baths and the surrounding Sutro Heights Park, the dilapidated grounds of a former swimming pool that is now one of San Francisco’s most photogenic sites. Harold and Maude also visit the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park.

American Graffiti (1973)

The Movie: George Lucas used the town of Petaluma to create the Bay Area of his early Sixties youth, but the center of the movie’s action is San Francisco’s Mel’s Drive-In, a vintage diner that still exists. The coming-of-age vignettes that comprise the movie are full of mid-century signifiers like Sock Hops and drag races, like the one in the following clip:

The movie’s main characters grapple with the choice of leaving for college or staying in their small-town environs, and many audiences consider it a classic portrayal of adolescence.

The Sights: Mel’s Drive-In still serves burgers to nostalgic audiences, and the pristinely preserved Petaluma is a popular location choice for films set in the mid-twentieth century. Audiences will instantly recognize both the diner and the town as American Graffiti’s evocative locations.

New Orleans has had a rocky time since the 2005 devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina, until that time it was the largest city in the state and a major U.S. port city. New Orleans is trying to make a come back and once again lead the state in a variety of ways and you can help by boosting their economy through tourism dollars. If you’re thinking about taking a vacation, why not visit New Orleans and check out their top landmarks.
French Quarter

New Orleans’s oldest and most famous neighborhood is an absolute must see for any tourist to the area, in fact it would be hard to miss this tourism Mecca. Founded in 1718, the French Quarter or Vieux Carre is a noted National Historic Landmark, but within the Quarter are several other landmarks and places of note. Part of the charm of the French Quarter is that the buildings have been protected since the 1920’s so the architectural integrity remains intact. Initially the French Quarter was very influenced by French style and architecture but two catastrophic fires in 1788 and 1794 destroyed many of the original buildings and the colony’s new Spanish residents created what was then a more modern and Spanish style. The city has seen its share of ups and downs and financial highs and lows, currently it is not inhabited by many residents and serves more as a tourist stop.

Jackson Square

In the heart of the French Quarter and serving as a focal point is Jackson Square. Originally known as Place D’Arms, the city center was used as a public square, military parade grounds and marketplace. This place grew in popularity and importance until after the Battle of New Orleans in 1814 when Baroness Pontalba pushed forth a new design which incorporated statues (the most prominent replica is a bronze of Andrew Jackson and thus the name change to Jackson Square), formal gardens, walkways and benches, all surrounded by an iron fence. Today this area is full of artists and is a great place to find a one of a kind souvenir.

St. Louis Cathedral

From Jackson Square, in the heart of the French Quarter is a building that is known the world over, St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States. Since 1718 people have worshipped on this spot, but the current cathedral wasn’t built until the period between 1789 and its completion in 1794. Through the years there have been hurricanes, a dynamite bomb and several additions to the building, but perhaps the most noted event was a visit by Pope John Paul II in September of 1987.

Café du Monde

Café du Monde is not a tourist destination for an entire day of fun, but it’s a great stop before you get started. Most noted for its café au lait and beignets, Café du Monde has been in business since 1862. But be wary of replicas, the original is located in the upper end of the French Market but they’ve branched out since then and can even be found in Japan. So, if you’re in New Orleans, make sure you visit the original.

Preservation Hall

If you’re looking for music, especially jazz music, then Preservation Hall should be the first and last stop on your trip. Located in the French Quarter, Preservation Hall hosts nightly performances and most of them are traditional New Orleans style jazz. Initially the hall was more art gallery than anything else. Owner Larry Borenstein noted that not many people were coming to this gallery so he sought out local jazz musicians and invited them to play for tips, hoping to draw a crowd to his gallery. In the 1960’s these jazz greats were largely forgotten and only minimally employed, Borenstein gave them a chance to earn a living and reach a greater crowd and the live jazz performances indeed drew a crowd, just not to the art gallery. Remarkably, Preservation Hall survived the two fires that ravaged the area and Hurricane Katrina and is one of the oldest buildings in the French Quarter, the oldest having been built only five years before Preservation Hall. Make sure you come early as the line for performances can get quite long, the admission price is dirt cheap and standing room only is the norm.

Steamboat Natchez

Taking a ride of the Steamboat Natchez is a great way for tourists to take in the sights of the famed port region of New Orleans. This authentic steamboat is the ninth such incarnation and has been in operation since 1975 and features an actual steam calliope. Tours depart twice daily and the evening trip features dinner and jazz music. Both trips give you a nice relaxing view of the city from the Mississippi River and little bits of local information that will give you something to talk about.

St. Louis Cemeteries

One of the more macabre tourist destinations in New Orleans are the above ground cemeteries. Often referred to as cities of the dead, the tombs are above ground because the high water tables would force caskets up and out of the ground after a heavy rain. In fact, in the areas considered “safe” where caskets are buried underground there still is a casket or two that makes its way to the surface ever so often. Eventually the Spanish influence in the city spread to the graveyards and above ground tombs were the preferred method of internment. One thing that may shock visitors is the small family tombs with several people entombed. The rule is that once a body has been laid to rest for two or more years, it can be removed from the coffin, stored in a body bag in the back of the tomb and then a new casket can be inserted. If it hasn’t quite been two years and there’s already a body waiting, the cemetery will place that person’s casket in a temporary holding vault. There are 42 cemeteries in the New Orleans area and each one comes with its own legends and ghost stories so go wild and visit all of them, or narrow it down to one or two and get a taste for the experience.

Los Angeles may be the biggest city in California. It may also be the highest populated city in the United States and the most well known in the world. However, when someone say’s “Los Angeles” the first thing that comes to mind is Hollywood and sunshine. It’s true, even in December and January you’d be hard pressed to find the temperature hitting below 55 degrees and it’s a real event if it ever snows. Los Angeles is the perfect vacation destination any time of year. Sure, there’s plenty to see relating to Hollywood, but there are even more places to see that you may not know about.

Universal Studios is one of the most visited location by travelers in all of Los Angeles, so it makes sense that it would be our first sight to list. The main attractions is the “Tram Tour” that takes you through the soundstages and back lot, where many TV shows and movies are filmed. However, Universal Studios is like a theme park in many ways, with specialty rides, hotels, restaurants, shops and shows. You can get tickets to join the audience of any taping TV shows. If this is your main vacation attraction, you’ll be happy to hear that there are two luxury hotels and a shopping center right outside the Studios’ gates.

Hollywood Walk of Fame was the creative idea of Los Angeles’ local artist, Oliver Weismuller. With the task of giving Hollywood a face lift back in 1958, he came up with the idea of 2,000 pink stars in the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard. Joanne Woodward received the first star back in 1960. Since then the stars have continued on down Vine Street with a current total of 2,300 with names of stars and show business personalities honored for their contribution to the entertainment industry.

Santa Monica Pier will take you back to the good old days of Los Angeles with their historic 1916 carousel and play land arcade. The Pier’s aquarium is full of touch tanks, displays and Santa Monica Bay’s marine life. During the summer there are music performances encouraging you to get up and dance or you can just sit in the sand and enjoy. Pacific Park is right next door with their waterfront roller coaster and other rides.

La Brea Tar Pits sounds like a strange place to spend your vacation, but it’s so interesting that once you are there you won’t be sorry you came. The lake oozes with tar and methane gas. An ongoing excavation continues as prehistoric animals, some 28,000 years old are pulled from it. This is the location of the most impressive collection of fossils from the Ice Age, in the world. You will see exhibits of the ancient skeletal remains inside the George Page Museum. In addition, you can watch outside bubble-bowl laboratory as paleontologists examine, clean and restore fossils.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater has been a Hollywood cornerstone for over 75 years. It started with a bang with a riot broke out during the grand opening in 1927. Fans lined Hollywood Boulevard fighting for a glimpse of stars as they arrived. The first movie of the theater was “The King of Kings.” The theater cost $2,000,000 to build with permission granted by the U.S. government to import and include, from China, artifacts such as temple bells, Heaven Dogs and pagodas. Still today, Grauman’s is the most sought after theater to show premiers with fans still trying to get a look at celebrities as they enter the theater.

Sunset Strip became famous with the early TV show, “77 Sunset Strip.” This mile and a half stretch of road that encompasses cutting edge restaurants, nightclubs, rock clubs and boutiques. It passes through West Hollywood and is known as the celebrity’s hangout where you might see movie stars, rock stars and other entertainers. Many celebrities, such as Cameron Diaz, Leo DiCaprio, Keanu Reeves, Paris Hilton and others, live in the near by areas of Hollywood Hills and Laurel Canyon.

Venice Beach was just a marshland before Abbot Kinney got his hands on it. He envisioned a California style Venice, Italy with gondolas, hotels, an amusement pier and Italian style buildings. It opened in 1904 and did well until the depression hit and then World War II. However, it never died and bounced back in 1944. Today, it’s known for it’s cultural melting pot of music and art with a lifestyle all it’s own. You shouldn’t be surprised to find a movie being filmed when you are there or that it seems to be a home for body builders to show off their assets. It’s the number one beach on the West Coast and shouldn’t be missed.

Korean Bell of Friendship is a huge bell bestowed upon the U.S. as a bicentennial gift to commemorate Korean War veterans. The Republic of Korea donated the bell in a show of friendship in 1976. It weights 17 tons and stands 12 feet high beneath a stone pagoda structure. The housing structure stands on 12 columns with animals guarding at each one. The 12 columns represent the signs of the oriental zodiac. The bell gets rung four times a year, Korean Independence Day (August 15), July fourth, New Years Eve and every September to commemorate Constitution Week.

Heritage Square Museum boasts twelve turn of the century homes that have been relocated and restored. Take a guided tour to learn about Victorian American structures and living. You’ll also see Palm’s Train Station which was used in a Laurel and Hardy flick way back when. If you can visit Los Angeles during Halloween week you’re kids will get a real treat with trick-or-treating between the houses, craft making and choosing a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch.

Watts Towers is a group of 99 foot folk art masterpieces created with steel rods, pipes and wire mesh with decorations of ceramic tiles, seashells, scrap metal, bottles and more. This famous Los Angeles monument was sculpted by a construction work, Simon Rodia, over 30 years of spare time, completed in 1954. Every year, thousands of people are gathered at the site to enjoy the Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival and the Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival.

China Town in Los Angeles may be smaller than the ones in San Francisco and New York, but you won’t want to miss the total cultural richness of the population while enjoying the authentic Chinese restaurants and picking up a remembrance or two from their shops. The location is pedestrian friendly and walking is really the only way to experience the entire flavor of China Town. After all, the old Los Angeles down town area, including China Town, was built for streetcars in mind, not for today’s vehicles.

There’s more to see and do in Chicago than you can possible complete in one trip. So, before completing an itinerary for your coming trip, start a second list of things you want to do on your next trip. Did you know that Chicago has 40 museums, 150 plus theaters, over 6,000 restaurants and 3 of the world’s tallest buildings? You’ll also be interested to know that Chicago made the first pair of roller skates, the first steel sky scraper, the first Cracker Jacks and opened the first McDonald’s Restaurant. Well, there’s a whole lot more to see, so let’s get started.

John G. Shedd Aquarium is located on the coast of Lake Michigan. It offers over 650 species of fish, birds, reptiles and mammals not just from the area, but from around the world. There is a 90,000 gallon coral reef exhibit in which you can watch whales and dolphins. After you’ve had your fill of the aquarium, have lunch or dinner at one of the many exquisite restaurants that allow you a view of beautiful Lake Michigan while you eat.

Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world when it was first built and is still the tallest in North America at 1,450 feet. It’s still a pretty ominous sight and even more fun to take the high-speed elevator up 110 stories to the Skydeck where on a clear day you can see a major part of Chicago at what feels like the top of the world. The Chicago Tribune calls the Skydeck one of the 7 Wonders of Chicago.

Millennium Park is one of Chicago’s newest additions offering a multitude of indoor and outdoor activities. The outdoor pavilion offers top performing concerts. The winter ice skating rink is fun for the whole family. If you love gardens, you’ll enjoy a stroll around the Lurie Garden. Look for the Cloud Gate Sculpture, sometimes referred to as “The Bean,” made from 110 tons of steel.

Chinatown in Chicago is one of the largest in the country. Have fun shopping in the ethnic shops and eating at one of the great Chinese restaurants. You’ll want to pick up some red envelopes and put some money inside for a good-luck gift. Learn about the Chinese New Year and plan your own part back home for next year. Chicago’s Chinatown is ever expanding with a recent completion of a new shopping center.

Harpo Studios, that’s right, did you forget that Oprah, the talk show queen, is in Chicago? Her popularity grew out of her ability to pick and speak to topics many were not willing to bring to light. Now, she’s begin giving gifts to audience members. Some have been cars, her favorite things and one lucky person even got a house. Oprah continues to grow her empire with you “O” magazine and book club. She’s introduced Dr. Oz and others to the television scene.

Oak Street Beach is Chicago’s most frequented beach. The sand has been shipped in to complete this man-made beach. Bring a lawn chair, sun block and your bathing suit to enjoy this beach off of Lake Michigan and a great view of the John Hancock Building. Don’t worry about lunch, there’s a great café and plenty of food vendors along the bike path. If you are feeling like a game of volleyball, there are plenty of courts and games going on to join.

Wrigley Field is on the top of the list for any sports fan visiting Chicago. Take a tour and learn all the secrets of the Cubs home. You’ll stop at the player’s dugout and clubhouse, scoreboard, bleachers and playing field. This field is the second oldest ballpark in the majors, Boston holding the first. There’s lots of great baseball history here. These tours are only offered between April and September when the Cubs are the road. After this tour you’ll be revved up to see a game next time you’re in town.

Michigan Avenue Bridge is the most photographed spot in Chicago because of it’s great view of the river and city behind it. It’s the spot where the first settlers to Chicago first staked their ownership of land. The bridge was built to help transportation within the city and to enhance the water front. Michigan Avenue Bridge and bridge house were built in 1920.

Union Station is not the center of Chicago transportation as it once was. It is a must destination for the architecture alone. Large Roman columns reach up to the ceiling in the great hall where you can book a reception or wedding. It’s a 3,500 square foot room of beauty and style. Statues look down at travelers scurrying around or just sitting on the benches. Union Station houses Amtrak and the Metro commuter trains.

Lincoln Park was designed by the same landscape architect as New York’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmstead. It encompasses over 1,000 acres of lakes and greenery. Located on the north of Chicago next to the Lincoln Park Zoo and DePaul University. It was forest and quicksand until 1820s. The army created a small post in the area in 1824. Directly after the Civil War the area became home to a Polish community. Today, besides the Zoo and University, you’ll find an outdoor theater, a rowing canal, the Chicago History Museum and a stature of General Grant.

Holy Trinity Polish Church is touted as one of the most interesting church of Chicago. It’s Renaissance and Baroque style architecture abounds throughout the structure. The elaborately painted ceiling was done by K. Markiewicz in 1926. When first created, in 1873, the church brought in primarily Polish parishioners. Today, it is quite a mixed crowd of attendees from many different backgrounds. However, some of the services are still lead in the Polish language.

Chicago Sightseeing

Once you get started working your way around the many really beautiful and interesting sites of Chicago, you will think there is no end to it’s beauty, culture and style. Besides the many locations listed here, you can enjoy seeing such places as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry or the Clarence Buckingham Fountain, just for starters.

Besides the fact that Phoenix is considered one of the younger cities of the U.S., incorporated in 1881 and many of the true historic landmarks have long been torn down, the story of this city can still be told. Soon after landing at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport you will find yourself winding way through museums and those locations that still hold the memories of events long gone by. With our list of historical landmarks around Phoenix, and its surrounding towns of Glendale, Scottsdale and Tempe, you won’t have to dig so hard to learn how this area was built and how it has emerged as the fifth largest metropolis in the U.S.

The Wrigley Mansion, built in 1932 by the Wrigley chewing gum king, William Wrigley Jr. The cost of building the mansion was 1.2 million, a hefty price back then. Its official name, La Colina Solana (The Sunny Hill) was dubbed by Wrigley himself. With Mediterranean and Spanish influences, the mansion is an elegant 16,850 square feet. The structure has 24 rooms and 12 bathrooms. If you can imagine, it is the smallest of Wrigley’s homes. He must have made sold a lot of sticks of gum in his time. Today the Wrigley Mansion is open to the public at which you can request the location for a special occasion.

Historic Heritage Square is a square city block which is the only remaining original Phoenix town site. The structures, including houses, commercial buildings and carriage houses date back to the late 1800s. Visitors can enjoy the structures and their architecture as many have been transformed into museums, restaurants and shops. The most elaborate and largest home in Historic Heritage Square is the Rosson House, built in 1885. Join a tour to learn all of the historic information regarding these Victorian buildings.

St. Mary’s Basilica is the oldest and most beautiful Catholic church in Phoenix, built in 1881. Founded by Father Edouard Gerard, the Roman Catholic Basilica has Spanish architecture with twists of French and Southwestern influences. In 1987 Pope John Paul II visited the church. A daily mass is still practiced at St. Mary’s.

Hall of Fame Fire Museum displays 90 fully restored fire trucks dating back to 1725. There is a complete hands on exhibit area where you can actually put on old-time fire gear. Don’t miss the collection of fire helmets depicted as a timeline. The change in helmets through the years is very interesting. This is a budget friendly destination for the whole family with the $5 admission fee and free parking.

Mystery Castle was built in 1939 by Boyce Gulley. It may seem more like a local oddity than a historical landmark, but it’s so interesting it seemed as though it was a destination not to be missed while in Phoenix. The entire structure is made from odds and ends of salvage material, artifacts and just plain junk. Tours are still given from October to mid June, Thursday through Sunday.

Taliesin West, located northeast of Phoenix at the foothills of McDowell Mountains, is a tribute to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. This 600 acre complex is the backdrop to Wright’s designed structures that blend seeming naturally with the nature that surrounds them. Taliesin (pronounced tal-ee-ess-in) means “a shining brow.” Taliesin West was contemplated after Taliesin I, II and III, built in Wisconsin, had burned in succession. It’s massive walls are built from the desert’s rock with redwood beams by his students. At the time it was meant to be only a winter camp, but grew into much more. Today this site is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Memorial Foundation and School of Architecture. Guided tours are offered.

Phoenix Museum of History is where you will find the preserved artifacts of the cities history. The museum will take you through the beginning of Phoenix as a dusty town in the desert to the Phoenix Metro of today. This central Phoenix area built it’s agricultural economy through a series of canals that were hand dug by the Hohokams. Follow the pre-statehood period of the pioneers as they built the area up. Enjoy an interactive exhibit and feel what it was to live during the time of Camp McDowell.

Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium was the last commissioned structure designed by famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s located on the Arizona State University campus and was named after the president of the university from 1933 to 1959. The auditorium opened in 1064 with a performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1985 the structure was entered into the list of the National Register of Historic Places. With a total seating capacity of 3017, it is not only wheelchair accessible but also offers a system for 30 hearing impaired visitors as well as hand signers. Interestingly, from a sky view the auditorium depicts a guitar.

Phoenix Police Museum follows the history of the men and women in blue and their great service and sacrifice for the city and it’s people. In 2006 the police department celebrated an important anniversary of 125 years. You’re going to love the recreations of a 1900’s police station. It will make you feel like a time traveler when you see the 1919 Model T police car.

Arizona State Capital originally housed the territorial and state legislators. However, it is now maintained as a historic museum as government officials have moved to surrounding buildings. It was first built to show that the territory was ready for statehood. Although the original plans for the structure was meant to be much larger, it was scaled down when funds ran out. But, it was ready for business in 1901 with additional wings added in 1918 and 1938. Today, the capital has been restored to its appearance of 1912 and is open to the public for viewing. A special display honors the men of the USS Arizona which was lost at Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Phoenix Area Landmarks

The fighting spirit and rich history of Phoenix may be young in the standards compared to other cities of the U.S., but there is much to see and do that will bring the full spectrum of the lives of the early pioneers to the people of today. This region has historic landmarks that will give you a feeling for the uniqueness of Phoenix. Click here for great rates on hotels in Phoenix.

Nashville is a city for sights and sounds and it’s a great place to vacation. If you’re headed to Nashville, Tennessee for a vacation you can expect to take in a lot of glitz and glamour as well as the incredibly beauty that is this part of the country. It’s not a secret that Nashville is the center of the country music industry so why not start your sightseeing with some country music classics.

Grand Ole Opry

To some the Grand Ole Opry is just a radio program focusing on a combination of the most famous country artists around and some of the most hopeful aspiring musicians. But to those who get to visit Nashville, it’s so much more. For more than 75 years this radio program has brought live concerts to country music fans tuned in to the radio across the country. From the stage you can watch as the singer steps into the wooden circle, which came from the original stage at the Ryman Auditorium, the exact same spot where such famous country stars as Patsy Cline and Hank Williams took to the stage. Don’t forget to bring your camera for this performance, in Grand Ole Opry tradition, at the end of the performance you’re allowed to “rush the stage” to get photos of the performers. To add a little more excitement to this experience, because this is a live radio broadcast you are a part of the action and even get to see commercials performed live on stage. Book your tickets in advance to make sure you get in the door as these shows are very popular and only happen on Fridays and Saturdays and some Tuesdays.

Country Music Hall of Fame

More country fun can be had at the Country Music Hall of Fame, the official home of country music since 1967. Situated on the rolling Cumberland River, the Hall of Fame is just a few steps from the historic Ryman Auditorium where the Grand Ole Opry had its start. The exhibits are more about the fiber of the country as told by those who lived off the land and loved the country rather than about the glitz, glamour, sequins and high hair that country music came to epitomize. The humble roots of country songs bring more meaning to the words, lyrics and ghostly old voices as you listen to the Sing Me Back Home exhibit or as you spend time viewing old video clips and live performances. Even if you’re not a huge lover of the music genre, you’ll have to admit that the pioneers here overcame incredible odds to create a music style that is truly about the American experience.

Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center

A hotel is not often on the sightseeing checklist but Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center is one that deserves a visit and a few photographs. Water is the theme in this hotel which boasts 600,000 square feet of meeting space. A river runs through the hotel with its own Delta flatboat, surrounded by cascading waterfalls and nine acres of indoor gardens. It’s a truly stunning display that is brilliantly decorated for the holidays if your trip happens to coincide with that time of year. In addition, the Opryland Hotel features fine and casual dining for almost every taste as well as some unique shopping opportunities that will net you those much desired souvenirs. The hotel also sponsors some great entertainment on location, so if you’re out to see as many top-notch shows as possible, make sure you check Opryland’s schedule.

Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art

For a change of pace, let’s move away from country music and glamour and take a deeper look at the beauty of the Nashville region of Tennessee. The Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art always features something worth seeing. Spanning 55 acres, guests are invited to stroll the gardens and experience the botanical wonders that lie within. There are a large number of themed gardens which each offer a different experience and a different feel, but no matter which one you lean toward, there is a sense of peaceful calm and graceful elegance everywhere. If you’ve had enough of the beautiful gardens and the idyllic climate, you can head inside to the art museum, housed in a 30,000 square foot Georgian style mansion. The art museum features permanent exhibits and traveling ones and an extensive collection of silver and Worcester porcelain.

General Jackson Showboat

One of the most popular things for tourists to do in Nashville is take a tour on the General Jackson Showboat, which bills itself as the world’s grandest showboat. Maybe not the world’s grandest, at least not by any official ranking, the General Jackson is a 300 foot paddlewheel riverboat which is one of the largest in the country. There are four decks on the boat and an eye-catching two story Victorian Theater located in the center. On board you’ll obviously be treated to a show, whether you attend an afternoon or an evening cruise. In addition to the show and the sights and sounds of the Cumberland River, you can also schedule a cruise to include a meal which is bound to be one of the highlights of your vacation.

The Parthenon

To see something really unexpected in Nashville, head to The Parthenon. This replica of the Greek Parthenon features a 42-foot statue of Athena, just like the original, making it seem a bit out of time and out of place. But it’s a great addition to the city’s Centennial Park. Inside you’ll also see plaster replicas of the Parthenon marbles and some direct casts of the original sculptures. In addition, the Parthenon serves as the city’s official art museum. The permanent collection is home to 63 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists all donated by James M. Cowan. This Parthenon replica was constructed in 1897 for the Centennial Explosion and through the years has served to become a historic monument of its own right. Admission prices are very reasonable, but check before going as the hours of operation are a little bit limiting.

There is just so much to see and do in Nashville that we’ve only brushed the surface, if you’re stopping for vacation, try to get out and do as much as possible as those memories will leave an indelible mark that will last a lifetime. When looking for a place to stay, consider staying at a downtown Nashville hotel, which is convenient to the Nashville International Airport, Music Row and Vanderbuilt University. Hotels Cheap is a great source for all your hotel deals in Nashville.

Founded in 1718, the French Quarter or Vieux Carre is a noted National Historic Landmark, but within the Frech Quarter are several other landmarks and places of note.

Anaheim California is home to a number landmarks that can spark historical and cultural interest in almost every visitor. Best known as being the home to a number of theme parks, such as the very famous Disneyland, Anaheim actually has much more to offer.

Anaheim was founded in 1857 by grape farmers and wine makers and for a while these mainly German settlers flourished, but an insect infestation in 1880 wiped out these crops and other types of produce took their place. Oranges were the main source of income for farmers in this very agricultural region until 1955 when Disneyland opened its doors to the public.

One landmark that dates back to the era of grape farming is the Mother Colony House. Built in 1857 by George Hansen, the man hired to plan the layout of the future Anaheim by 50 families that were part of the Los Angeles Vineyard Society. The hope was to turn the area into a successful grape growing community. In its original concoction, Mother Colony House didn’t have a kitchen or indoor bathroom. It wasn’t until it was sold in 1963 that the cottage was developed into a three bedroom house. The home was set to be demolished when it was purchased by the Daughters of the American Revolution who had it moved to West Street. It wasn’t until 1929 that the home was dedicated as a museum, making it the oldest museum in Orange County.

Established shortly after Mother Colony, Anaheim Landing was the creation of the Anaheim Landing Company and served as a port for the Santa Ana Valley for 15 years, even though the entrance was quite dangerous and there were several shipping disasters. By 1915 the area had transformed and used the seaside location to its advantage by turning the beach into a family fun place complete with roller coaster. As the years progressed the family atmosphere waned in the 1920’s as gambling casinos and a rough crowd moved in, but that also didn’t last long and the beach was once again reclaimed by families and tourists. Now known as Seal Beach there is nothing left of the original Landing or the rollercoaster and gambling halls, but the area is still a landmark and a great tourist destination for families.

Listed as an Orange County landmark, the North Gate of the City of Anaheim was originally a wall of willow poles surrounding the Anaheim Colony to keep out wild animals and protect the precious original grape fields and then the other crops which would eventually follow. Gates were placed at the north, east, south and west sides of town on the main streets to allow passage. Today there is little left to suggest a colony of organized grape producers once lived inside protected walls, but there is a historical marker at least taking note of the location of one of the gates.

Anaheim White House speaks to the wealth and success some of the western settlers discovered. Built in 1909 by Dosithe Gervais the home was sold not long after to Mr. and Mrs. George Waterman who just as quickly passed it along to Dr. and Louise Truxaw who firmly established themselves in the community. The home passed through a few hands until 1981 when Jim and Barbara Stovall purchased the home as a tear down and made elaborate plans to build a condominium. It wasn’t until the night before the home was to be destroyed that Barbara confessed she simply couldn’t bear to destroy the gorgeous old home and instead it became The White House Restaurant. During the restoration of the home to its original condition, much care was taking to return the home to its original glory. Currently the restaurant is owned by Bruno Serato and it’s been redubbed the Anaheim White House, it’s a historical landmark and a celebrated Italian restaurant. It’s the perfect end to a day of historical curiosities.

Another noted landmark in Anaheim is the Crystal Cathedral which is an active ministry and home of the Hour of Power television and online show. But even the non-religious can enjoy the experience of this landmark building. This magnificent building is really a site to behold. Designed by Philip Johnson the four-pointed star contains 10,000 panes of glass and seating for almost 3,000. Admission to the cathedral is free but if there is a special event, which there quite often is, there may be a fee. A gorgeous architectural feat, the Crystal Cathedral is a photo opportunity landmark.

Another landmark in Anaheim, whether you like him or not, is the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation. Packed with fascinating history from the Ex-President’s lifetime and political career. Quite possibly the most famous scandal in U.S. Presidential history, the Watergate recording that became the smoking gun of his trial, is available for visitors to listen to. In addition to the museum artifacts and historical relics, the museum hosts many guests and events throughout the year and you may be lucky enough to get in on one of these noteworthy events. If you find the past of Richard Nixon fascinating the you may want to travel the short distance to Yorba Linda, to take a tour of the Richard Nixon Birthplace. The home was one of the popular kit projects of the era and stands today with most of the original furnishings and very little in the way of renovations.

Not exactly a landmark, and currently not listed on the historical register, although I’m sure it will have its day, Anaheim’s world-famous Disneyland is truly a landmark that cant be missed, especially if you’ve never been or you have small children. Disneyland is a magic land with sights and sounds that just can’t be found anywhere else, unless it’s another Disney park.

Anaheim is best known for its Walt Disney concoction, but there is more to offer in this bustling tourist town, once a noted farming community the past is not forgotten and honored in several different ways throughout the community. Take a minute to look behind the curtain and see what else Anaheim’s Landmarks have to offer. The area is best accessed through John Wayne Aiport in Orange County, but consider LAX Airport, Burbank Airport, Long Beach Airport, or even San Diego Airport as alternatives.

Hotels Cheap is your online landmark for great hotel savings in Anaheim.
