Another nightclub that tries to mirror its big city siblings is Venus. Again, theme nights reign supreme at Venus but this club doesn’t focus on music genres for its themes, it goes out on a little bit of a limb and focuses on risqué topics. Sunday’s focus, what else – sex. Monday is all about promotions and something new and different is featured every week. Wednesdays are deemed wet and wild with an all male review and a hot DJ for serious dancing. Thursdays routinely feature Cukie Jones and the Babettes or Aiko’s Extravaganza Spectacular Review. Fridays feature more of the male review and some Las Vegas style excitement. Not your traditional relaxed Hawaiian atmosphere, Venus offers a lot of excitement and variety to those seeking stories to bring home to their friends.

For the perfect mix of trendy and old school (meaning those over 30 are also welcome) give Zanzabar Nightclub a try. This nightclub prides itself on the amount of money they’ve put into their club which doesn’t much matter if the DJ’s don’t rock and the clients aren’t hot. Luckily for Zanzabar, they’ve got all of that and more. You’ll hear the rhetoric that more than $6 million was spent on the club and that they’re the number one spot for tourists and locals alike, but don’t let the hyperbole scare you away. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to see and be seen. Hawaii is not known for its high-energy night life but Zanzabar is loaded with energy and keeps the party going all night.

If you’re looking for a good drink, a simple bar meal and a laid back evening then Moose Mcgillycuddy’s With happy hour happening every day from 4pm to 7pm it’s the perfect post shopping or after beach retreat for dinner. It may always be raining, but that’s just a better reason to head on inside and catch some night vibes. Seattle is a happening city with a good number of clubs and hot spots. Almost every taste in music is represented and the level of excitement is adjustable to suit your mood.  From the Sea-Tac Airport, head dowtown Seattle to begin your fun!

Until then, give The Tractor Tavern a try. With live shows 5-7 nights a week featuring a wide range of local and national acts, you’re bound to find something that gets you up and dancing. The dancing and music is really the highlight at Tractor, but Pabst Blue Ribbon is on tap, several great ales are chilling in the cooler and you can order a TV dinner if you’re feeling a bit puckish.

Another great place to catch live music is Neumo’s . Voted Editorial Winner by Citysearch, this club knows how to book a good act and pack the club. Not big on variety, Neumo’s features mainly indie rock music, but they’ve chosen a popular theme that draws a hard drinking crowd. The balcony seating is great to really view the act, but no matter where you end up, you’ll get a great show.

For a totally difference live music experience, The Triple Door  is a great way to spend an evening. First there is the delicious Asian menu (from Wild Ginger the upstairs neighbor), then there is the full bar and award-winning wine lest. And most importantly there is the music. The Musicquarium and the Mainstage Theater both feature great live music, most of it with a jazz flare. Although the renovated 1920’s era vaudeville is really worth experiencing, you can catch the music on the cheap. The live shows are piped into the bar, so you can save the price of a ticket and experience the live show from the bar.

Okay, one last live music venue, The Funhouse, dubbed Seattle’s oldest surviving punk club, is a great old-school experience. There’s no pretense, no attitude and plenty of good vibes. The Funhouse features great local talent and the crowd is there to listen, drink cheap beers, and enjoy the camaraderie of other patrons.

If dancing is more your speed then head over to The Last Supper Club. With three levels and four bars (not to mention several private rooms) there is ample space for dancing. Most nights feature a DJ but there are live acts booked with some regularity. Most patrons seem to enjoy the lowest bar and its laid back atmosphere, but if you want to see and be seen, then give one of the higher floors a try.

For more multi-leveled fun, give Trinity Nightclub a once – or thrice – over. This three-roomed dance club features different DJs so each room has its own distinct flare. It’s basically three different nightclubs under one roof. The Main Room is the happening spot with a large dance floor and a kicking beat. The Blue Room is a bit futuristic and trendy and draws national acts. For a more relaxed atmosphere, the Card Room offers a taste of elegance and some delectable delights as well.

Maybe the most happening hot spot of the moment, The War Room is constantly packed. If you’re just going for the experience, try visiting on a week day rather than a weekend. Wednesdays feature an 80’s them and have almost the amount of excitement as a weekend night. DJ’s play nightly and the dance floor is almost always rocking. It’s a comfortable hot spot for locals and visitors.

SEE Sound Lounge offers a bit more laid back atmosphere as the guests sip cosmos and nibble on the Mediterranean treats. But the DJs know how to spin a techno groove that often gets the crowd up and moving. The crowd is a bit more upscale but the drinks are still moderately priced. If you’re looking for a good salsa club, try See Sound on Tuesdays.

A chameleon of a bar, Club Noc Noc serves its post work patrons well with generous happy hour prices and comfortable atmosphere, but stay too long and you’ll either get swept away with the partying dancers or wish you had left a bit earlier. The Noc Noc swiftly turns (as quickly as that first DJ starts spinning) into a happening dance club and hot spot. And to add to its chameleon type nature, some nights such as 80’s night or goth night, draw an entirely different crowd. Check the schedule and keep your eye on your watch to catch the transformation.

Seattle is a laid back kind of town that is very serious about its music business. If you’re going for a visit and want to hit the clubs bring something nice to wear, but leave your coolest garb at home. Swank is the word that comes to mind when one visits Balroom Bar with its inspiration coming from the grand ballroom styles of the past, this dance club knows how to do a lot more than waltz. Sit back in the plush leather booths or plop on top of a metallic art deco styled stool and take in the action or kick up your heels and head out onto the dance floor. As the evening wears on and you make more than a couple visits to the three bars you may decide to try your had on one of the many gold dancing polls that decorate the dance floor, definitely not your traditional ballroom style moves.

For a lot of party-goers when you think Montreal you think of Crescent (the party street) and you think of Thursdays (the party bar). The reputation for fun and clubbing is well deserved and earned and the club rocks with the best of them the world over. The crowd is a bit older and caters to the over 30 crowd and mainly attracts singles, in fact the locals refer to Thursdays as the biggest pick up joint around. But if you like good music, potent drinks, thumping bass and maybe a come on or two, then Thursdays simply can’t be missed.

Montreal is not the foodie town that some other big cities in Canada are, so your night on the town is probably going to be centered around drinks and dancing, but there are a few places that break that rule and Time Supper Club is one of these rule breakers. Decorated in a 1940’s art deco style with white furnishings accented by the red under-lit catwalk, Time is really a sparkling gem of a nightclub. It’s been known to draw some film stars and other glitterati so come dressed to impress. While the food is worth making the trip, the atmosphere and the dancing make Time a club worth hanging out in for a while.

If you’re not going to Crescent Street to party (and why aren’t you going to Crescent to party?) then try St. Laurent where about a mile of prime street front is dedicated to nightlife partying. Head to the corner of Rue Prince-Arthur and St. Laurent and take your pick from the many popular clubs in either direction. The parties in this area spill out from inside the clubs out onto the street and on the right night the entire region becomes one big hot spot. If you’re looking for a home base in this party central, try Vol de Nuit, where you can hang out inside and keep warm with some killer-strong drinks or squeeze onto the terrace and catch part of the street party happening around you.

And for the truly risqué in the crowd, no trip to downtown Montreal would be complete without a stop to the naked restaurant, but don’t worry, you can keep your clothes on. At Les Princesses it’s the wait staff that’s at least partially undressed. In addition to the nude themed staff, you can expect to see porn films on the television sets. As expected, the food isn’t exceptional but it’s reported to be palatable and very reasonably priced, at least you’ll walk out with a story to tell your friends.

Like most European influenced cities, Montreal sets its schedule to a different clock. Expect the majority of diners to come out around 7pm and club goers not to really hit their peak until around midnight. In some areas (like St. Laurent) the momentum doesn’t really crescendo until 3:00 am.

Be wary when going to Montreal that the locals believe strongly in their French heritage and the snobby reputation that comes with it. In most Canadian cities English is spoken or at least tolerated, this is not always the case in Montreal so if you really want to party with the locals then you’d better brush up on your French. Unlike in Paris, the people of Montreal tend to be more forgiving of those who at least make an effort and once you get to know them, Montreal natives can be the nicest people around.

Let’s keep with the public transportation theme for a minute and mention Transit Nightclub. A warehouse beneath the el train wouldn’t appeal to many but Transit found a way to turn it into one of the hippest dance clubs in town. Rather than going all kitschy with the theme, Transit keeps things simple and serious. This huge club sets its décor around the surroundings with geometric shapes and sparse furniture accenting the postindustrial metal staircases. If you’re lucky enough to get invited up one of those staircases you’ll find a couple extra special VIP rooms. Die hard dance fans will love the atmosphere and the bone shaking bass beats. Come dressed to impress, the club may be low key but the clientele is not.

More music, more dancing and more fun can be found hidden in the River North gallery district if you look hard enough. The Funky Buddha Lounge uses the surrounding industrial region to camouflage this happening hot club. The outside features a Buddha sculpture on the door lets you know you’re in the right place, but be prepared to be wowed when you enter that door. The inside is a mélange of all that is cliché in clubs, red lighting, black leather and faux fur, candles and secret dens for canoodling. The old crowd used to grove to the standard fare of hip-hop, bhangra, funk, African and soul music but lately a new crowd has moved in and Thursday nights feature a much younger set that is ready to rock while Fridays and Saturdays feature the eclectic crowd who are out to see and be seen.

A more well known and high-energy nightclub can be found at Crobar. Top international DJs grace the stage at Crobar and get the crowd to their feet. Packed into this smaller nightclub you can’t help but feel the excitement of the music and the crowd. If you’ve hit the famous Randolph Street’s Restaurant Row for dinner then you’ll be happy to know you can stay right in the area and hit one of the current chic hotspots. If you still haven’t had enough of the nightlife, head to the Martini Ranch for a late night nightcap. With a menu of more than 60 martinis there is no doubt you’ll find something to your liking, as long as you like it tasty and strong. The Martini Ranch is open until 4am every night except Saturday when it pushes the curfew back to 5 am. Not only are there incredible drinks at this late night hour, but you can also order traditional American tavern fare from their late night menu. Don’t worry about the party winding down, the Martini Ranch features some of Chicago’s best DJs who will keep that party vibe jumping. Or look for your oasis in the land of confusion and head out to the beer garden and one of the heated tables for that quiet evening nightcap.

San Francisco is a veritable museum for music lovers. Many of its famous hippie haunts are still intact, and the city is dedicated to the preservation of its bohemian environs. Visitors can troll the former neighborhood of Janis and the Dead, see a show at the infamous Fillmore, and shop at the country’s best record store in the course of a music-themed visit. Dig it.

Then: With SF’s most impressive roster of performers and the backing of mega-promoter Bill Graham, the Fillmore defined the live music scene of the mid- to late- sixties. Regular acts included the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, and the original Fillmore crowd also saw performances by the Doors, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, and the Who. In the minds of many music fans, the venue is the epicenter of psychedelia.

Now: The original venue became a nationwide franchise, thanks to promoters Live Nation. With outposts in Detroit, Philadelphia, Miami, and New York, the Fillmore name is still synonymous with groundbreaking acts. The original SF location, following a dramatic post-earthquake makeover, now hosts the likes of Spoon, Wire, Girl Talk, and Shudder to Think.

The Avalon Ballroom, Polk Gulch

Then: The Avalon’s lineup was second only to the Fillmore’s and included seminal acts like Captain Beefheart, Janis Joplin and Big Brother, 13th Floor Elevators, and the Doors. Interestingly, its promoter was Graham’s former partner and the two enjoyed a bitter rivalry. The venue’s psychedelic advertising posters, all produced by noted Bay Area artists, are one of the most sought-after relics of the generation.

Now: The original club lost its lease in 1968 and the venue became a movie theatre. Fortunately for music fans, a hippie promoter named Morning Spring Rain (yeah) purchased and repurposed the Avalon in 2003. Now the Regency Center Grand Ballroom, it’s hosting performances by Squeeze, the Fratellis, James, Of Montreal, and Health.

Haight-Ashbury, “the Haight”

Then: Initially a Beat stronghold and later Hippie Valhalla, the Haight housed Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead in its cheap, run-down 19th century structures. As San Francisco’s music scene rose to national recognition, the neighborhood became a refuge for young people, vagrants, and runaways who wanted to experience the hippie lifestyle.

Now: Though the Haight has experienced some gentrification and economic upswing, it’s still primarily bohemian and relatively inexpensive. In keeping with its musical traditions, it’s now home to Amoeba Music, widely considered the country’s best record store. Tourists flock to the Haight’s famous intersection for photo ops with the street signs.

The Bottom of the Hill, Potero Hill

Then: The youngest venue on the list, the Bottom of the Hill opened in 1991 to host a resurgence of psychedelic acts, many of whom counted the area’s original scene as their primary source of inspiration. It’s an adopted home for West Coast bands like the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, who defined the scene in the 90s and continue to play at BotH today.

Now: The venue racks up awards as the Bay Area’s best for rock music and typically hosts shows every night of the week. The roster is comprised of upcoming and underground acts, including Xiu Xiu, A Place to Bury Strangers, Bang Camaro, Born Ruffians, and Frightened Rabbit. Candlestick Park, San Francisco Bay

Then: Candlestick Park was initially the home of the San Francisco Giants, but music nerds know it as the site of the Beatles’ last commercial performance. Through the ensuing decades, the stadium also hosted major acts like the Rolling Stones.

Now: Now called Monster Park, it’s the current home of the San Francisco 49ers, though its fate as a football stadium is questionable. Like many stadiums, it tends to host immense rock audiences in its off-season, though no acts are scheduled at the moment. Still, it holds a place in concert lore and is a must-see for any Beatles fan.

Firkin and Phoenix is in the cozy English pub style offering full service lunch and dinner.  They have a great variety of bottled bear and 13 different beers on tap with inside seating or two outside patios.  Get your favorite beer during their pint sale on Monday through Friday, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  You get your choice of a $2 domestic pint, $3.50 imported pint or $3 Wells.  Not only that, Monday is free pool day – all day.  Tuesday brings $3 – 23 oz beers and 40 cent wings.  If you’re into poker, join them for Wednesday Pub Poker League and $8 beer pitchers.

Front Porch Pub has a full bar and nearly 100 different beer.  They’ve been voted the #1 happy hour bar in Midtown.  They’re just an all around fun after work bar or one where it’s just nice to feel like a local.  They have a full menu and the kitchen serves until 1:00am.  If you’re looking for something a little different, try the chocolate stout.

13 Celsius mirrors a European wine bar while being housed in a 1920s Mediterranean style building in Houston’s Midtown area.  Sit at the marble bar and marvel at the windowed wine cellar (maintained at 13 degrees Celsius).  Choose your favorite wine or be adventuresome and try something new.  All their wines go well with the fine cheeses and meats offered.  If you find a wine that speaks to you, take a bottle home.  They are also a retail wine seller.

Agora offers gourmet coffees as well as imported beers and a large selection of wines along with their Greek yogurts and cheeses.  It was voted the best coffeehouse in Houston by the Houston Press.  But, don’t that lead you to think that this is just a day-time experience.  It’s true, it is a bit on the tame side, but if that’s your style you will love the ambiance at Agora’s.

Anderson Fair started out as a coffee hangout, growing during the 60s and 70s to a local icon.  In the 80s you could eat, drink and enjoy the show that was going on at the “AFair Theater” just 8 inches above floor level.  The music that became famous during that time is still going strong and is called singer/songwriter in it’s traditional natural accompaniment without lip synching or synthesizing.  It creates a very intimate performance between singer and audience.

Goode’s Armadillo Palace is a mix between a Texas honky-tonk and history museum.  You’ll make up your mind one way or the other as to go on in when you drive up to the giant armadillo, wearing longhorns and breathing smoke, out front.  One thing for sure, there’s only one Armadillo Palace.  Once you’ve grabbed a pistol-handle to open the door and walked under a arch of antlers, you’ll settle right into the live music and saloon type bar.  The menu is full of Texas-style dishes to go along with the great beer on tap.

Bar Annie is a late night bistro and bar where you will enjoy appetizers, salads and entrees with a Southwestern flair along with a full bar.  It’s classy with a décor of wood accents and zebra print bar stools.  The atmosphere is relaxed although even the bar is set with fine linens and china.  For a fun night with a lot of class without the stuffiness the obvious choice is Bar Annie.

The Corkscrew is the place if you are a wine lover.  You can peruse racks of wine for just the right one for the mood your in.  If you can’t decide, converse with the knowledgeable and friendly staff for help in making your choice.  If you’re just in the mood for a glass of wine, gather around the beautiful Cyprus bar and choose between thirty different wines.  Watch the big screen TV, or move to a lounge atmosphere with comfortable seating and a quite conversational tone.

The Drake is a new and sizzling nightclub on trendy Washington Avenue.  It’s located right across from The Corkscrew, so you’ll have a chance to look in on both hopping night spots.  It’s housed in a former warehouse, but don’t let that fool you.  The Drake is a classy cocktail lounge with dark brown leather sofas and chandelier lighting.  It has the kind of romantic atmosphere where you’ll want to bring that someone special for an intimate evening.

Sammy’s, owned by the local talent, Sammy Relford, brings live music to his place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  You’ll find the owner introducing professional musicians in the soul, jazz and funk genres.  The dance floor is crowded and the entertainment is a lineup of local names such as Houston’s queen of R&B, Faye Robinson and the Mid City Players.

Numbers has it’s own motto, “No Dress Code, No Waitresses, No Valet and No Attitude.”  This a place where everyone is welcome to settle in and enjoy a cold drink and hopping music.  Top DJs spin the tunes with the added ambiance of a light show.  Other nights they host up and coming artists of different venues.  Join them Wednesday night for 50 cent beer.

Wildhorse Saloon is located in historic downtown Nashville.  They offer a great lineup of entertainers such as the Bellamy Brothers, Gladys Night, Heart, Kenny Loggins and many others.  But, buy your tickets ahead of time.  They go fast, especially for the well known names.  They have room enough to have a private party, but encourage you to schedule it as soon as possible.

Their menu offers smokehouse and southern cuisine as well as chili, salads, sandwiches and burgers.  There is a special menu for concert nights that is diminished from the regular menu.  However, they still offer their famous Wildfire Notchos and BBQ Sammy.

Tootsies (Tootsies Orchard Lounge)  has a long time rumor that Roger Miller wrote “Dang me” there.  Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Mel Tillis, Waylon Jennings and Patsy Cline were just a few of the famous customers to grace Tootsies in the early days.  In fact, Willie Nelson got discovered for his first songwriting job after singing at this night spot.  Check out their schedule of great entertainment on the website.

Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar is located in downtown Nashville.  They are known for the best live blues every night.  They even won the award “Keeping the Blues Alive” for the best blues club.  They offer a full menu featuring traditional Cajun cuisine including Looziana Hurricane Ribs, Gumbo and  Jambalaya.

Cadillac Ranch has the best mechanical bull in Nashville.  They offer a huge menu featuring southwestern steaks.  For those warmer nights make your way out to their outdoor patio which overlooks the district center in the marketplace.  If you stay inside, on game night your bound to find your team on one of the 20 flat-screen TVs.

Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar is known as the Nashville “Cheers” bar.  They have featured some of the greatest country music venues in the city.  It’s a good old beer bar where domestic brews are served.  It just feels “down home” to those that call it “my bar” and also to those that come by for a visit.  There’s no cover charge and a nice sunken dance floor.

B. B. King Blues Club does not only offer the best in blues entertainment, but also Motown  and classic rock.  The menu features Cajun “comfort foods.”   They have plenty of space for your private party or event.  Just schedule ahead.  The B. B. King All Stars play regularly bringing back that old time blues sound.  When you stop in have some of B.B.’s fried green tomatoes and the Carolina BBQ salmon.

Mercy Lounge says they are one of the best music venues around.  The are located in the historic Cannery Row off of Eighth Avenue.  The bohemian vibe bar offers retro pinball machines and pool tables for fun.  Downstairs they have the Canary Ballroom for private parties or some of the larger music concerts they put on.  There is a $20 cover charge.  They are open Monday through Saturday and on Sunday for concert events.

Virago is known for it’s trendy bar happenings as well as it’s great menu of seafood and sushi.  Their S-shaped bar offers the trendiest martinis in all of Nashville.  But if you’re thinking of just dropping in.  Think again and make reservations.  This is an extremely busy nightlife choice.  Try the Fire Crunch Shrimp, you won’t be sorry.  This is not a romantic location, but a “have the time of your life” fun kind of place.

The Big Bang Bar is the one-of-a-kind Nashville dueling piano bar.  In fact, it’s a sing-along dueling piano bar.  You’ve never had so much fun singing and dancing with people you know or total strangers.  You may wonder how you ended up on stage.  If you’re feeling like doing something different tonight, try The Big Bang Bar.

Green Iguana Bar and Grill is known for it’s “NO” cover charge 7 days a week.  And you can get breakfast in those wee hours of the morning along with their lunch and dinner menu.  Their location is on Westshore boulevard, with outdoor seating and next door they offer the Buddha Lounge serving great sushi.  Their hours are 6 am to 3 pm, giving you three hours to sleep and start your Green Iguana day all over again.

The Castle is a gothic style two floor nightclub with an excellent ground floor bar.  You may see some “interesting” characters roaming around this club.  So, if you are into the gothic scene or just want to try something different this may be your place for the night.  You’ll find different music on each floor and no one cares what you wear.  However, if you want to blend, “all black” is always a safe option.

Tampa Nightclubs and Bars

This is only a sampling of the multitude of nightlife locations in Tampa.  Enjoy the clear blue skies, sand and see by day and head out to a different nightclub every night.  What a great place for a vacation or weekend trip.  But don’t spend all your time indoors at night.  You don’t want to miss the beautiful sunset over the dark blue waters or the spectacular lighted cityscape.

The Church

Skip the Sunday service and head to The Church for a nighttime celebration instead. This old gothic church has been converted into one of Denver’s most popular dance clubs. For the younger crowd The Church may be a must see as its one of the few bars to offer an 18 and up dance club night which lets everyone in on the fun. Hush

A noted nightclub for its see and be seen crowd, Hush is actually not a favorite among the locals. So if you’re looking to maybe rub elbows with some of the glitterati, then Hush is the place to be, but if you’re looking for a friendly chic atmosphere with reasonably priced drinks, this is definitely not the place to visit.

Kazmo’s

For a more down to earth nightclub experience, try Kazmo’s which pretends to be a dive bar. Far from dive, Kazmo’s features great music, good drinks, and service that makes you feel welcome. LoDo’s Bar and Grill

Not the traditional nightclub or nightlife scene, but LoDo’s Bar and Grill has its place in the Denver experience. Good bar food and a pleasant sports themed atmosphere make this a comfortable place to begin your night of partying.

Martini Ranch

Despite its slightly pretentious name, the Martini Ranch is a pretty laid back locale with top notch martinis in the super cool upstairs martini lounge. This establishment is actually a three story club with the downstairs Shaker Room serving as the happening hot spot for dancers, the mid level provides diners with a little sustenance, while the martini bar on the top keeps patrons smiling.

Spy Bar and Lounge

Yep, it’s a theme bar but oh what a theme. This stylish bar actually has spy cameras galore, so if you get lucky enough to hit one of the VIP booths, check out the cameras that let you scan around and zoom in on the rest of the crowd. And a special note to the guys, if you absolutely loved the bond girls who shadow danced in the closing credits, then you’ll love Spy Bar’s own shadow dancers who tease the crowd nightly.

The Grizzly Rose

Don’t forget that Denver, for all its peace-loving hippy ways, was a cowboy haven full of miners back in the day. The Grizzly Rose plays up this tradition by turning a converted warehouse into a happening, hotspot for country music. If it’s live music you’re looking for, especially the kind with a country twang, then check out Grizzly Rose as they are known to draw some of the most famous country crooners around.

Sing Sing

Sing Sing is touted as a new twist on karaoke, but isn’t karaoke a different twist on what Sing Sing is really all about. Picture friends and family circled around a piano singing their hearts out, yep just like they did hundreds of years ago, or not so long ago at Christmastime. Now you know what makes Sing Sing famous. Don’t worry if you don’t have the voice, all you need is courage and a sense of fun.

Lime

Not just a nightclub, Lime is an excellent restaurant featuring American-Mexican fusion cuisine, but the reason the trendy crowd finds lime exciting is the largest margaritas in Denver and the local DJs who keep the patrons hopping. Lime is a trendy, cool dining experience that can easily turn into an entire evening of excitement.

Skylark Lounge

Belly up to the bar at Skylark Lounge, a popular 50’s themed bar that knows how to pour a drink. Local bands are typically what’s on tap, but ever so often you’ll get lucky and a touring rockabilly, swing or alternative country act will slide into town. If you want to do the night up right, feel free to go with a touch of kitsch and dress in 50’s style apparel.

Herb’s

Forget the pretense entirely and pull on your most comfortable pair of jeans for a night at Herb’s. This true grit dive bar is exactly what you need for a night of drinking and socializing with the regulars. No lines, no high priced girly drinks, just a traditional old fashioned bar with quality drinks and a bit of local color. In fact, Herb’s also features live jazz and blues music at times so you can also load up on quality tunes.

One side note for visitors to the Mile High City, obviously Denver is at a higher altitude than most people are used to, even though it doesn’t actually look that way from the city itself. It’s easy to get dehydrated and a little bit of altitude sickness when you’re at these elevations, so try not to overdo it with the alcohol, and keep yourself properly hydrated (with water) so you will be able to really enjoy your visit to Denver.

Rocket Room is an all rock bar and the place to go to see the latest new rock bands perform.  Head up stairs where their excellent sound system blasts out the nightly rocker’s music.  Downstairs it feels like the corner pub with pool tables, flat screen TV, foosball and jukebox.  There is a cover charge on the upstairs level, but downstairs is always free entrance.  It’s located in the Richmond District on Clements Street between 5th and 6th Avenue.

Ruby Skye, located in Union Square on Mason Street, is famous for its top DJ lineup.  The building was once the historic Stagecoach Theater.  This high style club hosts bands, fashion shows, dance nights, hangouts and private events.  There are two levels with four rooms and some private rooms that bring in celebrities to enjoy the evening without a lot of notoriety.  Yet, Ruby Skye has become one of the most notable nightclubs in San Francisco.

Red Devil Lounge is another of San Francisco’s hot lounges housed in an original historic theater.  Bands from around the world have performed in this convenient location on downtown’s Polk Street, near great restaurants and hotels which cover any level of luxury desired.  Live music, genre varying from night to night.  Pick your floor and enjoy the night.

Hemlock Tavern is a golden find for hipsters looking for the unknown yet next up and coming band. If you’ve never heard of the Shipper Kids or the high class garage band, Flakes, then you haven’t been to Hemlock’s lately.  They also have some great “free” DJ nights including a Sunday night country show.  There’s never a dull moment with every night exciting and full of fun.

111 Minna Street Gallery is your place if you’re into spending the evening at a fine disco emporium with some of the best electronic music around.  Choose between a shaken Martini or Cosmo while you enjoy the unique and beautiful works by artists such as Captain and Commander, Keli Reule and Henry Lewis.

Marsh’s Mock Cafe will fill your night with laughs.  The hottest comics in the city come here to listen to the audience’s laughter.  Robin Williams and Will Franken have even dropped by.  On off hours Marsh’s offers youth theater classes for ages 4 to 15 including dance, music, stagecraft and theater – later providing theater for the public.

The Albion is rundown and dark at first look, but then you notice the fun the night crowd brings to the place.  Is it because it’s been around forever, a total comfort bar or is it the many pool tables that spar good clean games that bring them night after night.

Doctor Bombay, yes it’s named after Dr. Bombay of TV’s original Bewitched.  It’s located right across the street from Roxie (old-time movie theater) on 16th Street.  They play great music all night long in this mellow hang out.  Their backroom’s  filled with the usual pinball and pool tables.

The Kilowatt offers live music but with a low cover charge.  It’s located on 16th and Valencia in an old firehouse.  Instead of dogs being excluded from this nightclub, they are encouraged – what fun for pet lovers.  If you’re so inclined sign up for their Hump Day Pool Tournament for the last Wednesday of the month.  It’s just a $3.00 entrance fee and it includes a complimentary drink.  First game starts at 7:30 PM sharp.

Jack’s Elixir has an Irish pub atmosphere and offers sixty different beers.  It’s one of the oldest existing saloons in San Francisco, restored to it’s original look.  Visit the original mahogany bar and fancy the roughriders that used to grace it’s presence in the wild west days.  Order a pint and ask the historically knowledgeable bartender anything that comes to mind.

Vesuvio Café-Bar has an old-time atmosphere with a twinge of the ’60s thrown in.  It’s a romantic little place right next to a great bookstore, City Lights Books,  where you can have a coffee or a drink.  It’s quite a change from the loud nightclubs you might find elsewhere in the city.  They tout themselves as an historical monument to “jazz poetry, art and the good life of the Beat Generation.”

Savoy Tivoli is a great night spot with a European atmosphere.  You’ll find a busy bar full of locals and newbies alike.  It’s located in the North Beach area on Grant Avenue.  It boasts a history back to 1906 and still has that old time feel to it.  It has a huge covered patio, four pool tables and an occasional visit from an Elvis impersonator.

San Francisco Nightlife

The nightlife in San Francisco is quite diversified making it the ideal place for fun day or evening.  Whether you choose to spend your evening in the Mission District with trendy bars, the old style North Beach area, the tourist-friendly Fisherman’s Wharf,  lower Soma with dancing in their refurbished warehouses, upper Soma with the locals or historic Nab Hill/Union Street you’re sure to find just the type of nightlife where you fit in best.

Not content to offer its guests just one nightclub experience, the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa wants to keep you on their property with mur.mur.  mur.mur is the laid back, luxury cousin to MIXX. Expect to get your groove on here, but not be jostled and hustled as much as you would with the other hotel hotspot. In fact, if you do get a chance to rub elbows, look for a celebrity as there are most likely several of them hiding in the corners, or dancing in the spotlight. Mur.mur is a bit pricier than most traditional Atlantic City hotspots, so if you’re looking for the bottle service, unless you’ve got the money to burn, this may not want to be where you want to pay for privilege. Bally’s offers a different sort of nightlife environment for their guests with Blue Martini a chic low key exclusive bar that offers more than 100 types of martinis and a built-in frosted ice rail for your drink when its not in hand. Live music keeps part of the crowd moving while sporting events on three 60-inch plasma screens keeps the rest of the crowd engaged. If you’re not a martini fan, there are several other upscale alternatives such as single malt scotches, small batch bourbons and wine. You’ll find Blue Martini located at the boardwalk entrance of Bally’s.

If you’re a Bally guest, but really not into the high end Blue Martini crowd, consider making a trip down to their Bikini Beach Bar. Open during the tourist season, this beachside bar is high energy excitement that offers great views of the ocean and more than a handful of bikini clad patrons. Pay attention to see if you can get in on one of their frequent promotions or events.

Trump is never one to be outdone, and whether its world class or not, you can guarantee he’s going to claim it is. So stop in at Trump’s world-famous Taj Mahal for a night out at Casbah Nightclub, one of the best nightclubs around. All kidding aside, Casbah can be one of the most happening places in Atlantic City, (sometimes with up to 2,200 guests a night) depending on who the guest DJ is and what else is going on around town. Check the DJ schedule to see if you’re struck by the skills of the frequently changing list of guest DJs. Beyond the musical talent, Casbah packs the club with sex as dancers are stuffed into cages and lifted above the crowd for your enjoyment. If you’re looking to spot a celebrity in Atlantic City this is probably going to be the safest bet in town.

Irish pubs are quickly becoming the most popular Irish import across the United States and Atlantic City is not exempt. The Trinity Irish Pub & Carvery is probably one of the better ones around and worthy of a visit, especially if you like a nice strong Irish whiskey or thick stout beer. The best part about Trinity is that not only the idea is imported but the interior was basically imported as well, from the ceiling tiles to the floorboards. Sit back and enjoy some upscale nouveau (or Americanized) Irish fare and soak in the lovely warm atmosphere, and a couple of beers as well.

Atlantic City is still a happening hotspot, even if it doesn’t quite compare to Las Vegas. In its own way the city proves that adage that number two is better because they try harder. The clubs in Atlantic City work to bring in top notch celebrities, whether they’re in the crowd or on the stage, the staff is very friendly and accommodating and the hotels go out of their way to offer their guests their every whim so they don’t leave their property and take their roll of gambling quarters elsewhere. And the best part about Atlantic City is ocean is right outside the door so you can take a break from the ringing bells of the one armed bandits and head out to the ocean for a relaxing nap in the sun soaked sand, or head over to Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar and begin your club hopping a little early.

While there are direct flights into Atlantic City Airport, consider Philadelphia, Newark or BWI as good alternatives.
