Let’s face it, the last decade has been perilous for Argentina’s economy and they are, in the last few years, just starting to make a rebound. This may seem a bit harsh but let’s face it; a country with a weak economy makes for a bargain vacation destination. Buenos Aires is a fabulous alternative to Europe if your vacation is slightly more budget focused and if pleasant weather is imperative to your personal enjoyment of the trip. Bare in mind due to the tilt of the earth, they have opposite weather patterns of North America. This can be especially nice if you looking for a winter season getaway. Why does it resemble Europe so much? As much as 85% of the population has European roots and many of the colonial structures have been replaced over the years with buildings reminiscent of Italy and Spain. Buenos Aires is famous for a number of things, but its affectionately known as the Capital of the Tango so your trip wouldn’t really be complete if you didn’t spend at least an evening or 2 at one of the local tango halls. Soccer is another sport that the locals are passionate about and if you are lucky enough to get tickets to game, it will be the most memorable sporting event of your life. Allowing 5 days is sufficient for getting to know the city, but tacking on another 3-5 days gives you the opportunity to visit some of the outlying areas such as the wine country regions of San Juan and Mendoza or to explore the magnificent beauty of the Iguazu Falls that border Brazil. Of course you might be so enthralled by Buenos Aires that you might follow the trend that many others have by making this your home away from home. Now that is the ultimate souvenir!
