The future of air travel has arrived and it looks like it comes on an à la carte menu.
In the past, people believed that price was the key motivator for travelers, whether they were traveling for business or pleasure. But as airlines started taking conveniences and luxuries off the table and began repackaging them as à la carte options they realized that price wasn’t necessarily the key motivator for most travelers. Convenience, schedule and comfort are actually just as important as price, and many will pay more for these benefits.
As the airline business embraces the customization of flights for its customers, customers are making their demands known. The latest request from travelers is technology and it looks like they’ll be getting their wish in the near future. Several airlines will be offering wi-fi options in 2008, with more sure to join the fray. But, of course, there will be a cost and if you want it, you’d better plan on paying for it.
This may sound like another industry is nickel and diming you to death, but its actually a win/win situation; those customers looking for the best deals will be able to pare down the amenities and get cheaper rates, while those who just cannot give up a few hours of internet time will be able to stay connected through their flight–it’ll just cost them a little more money.
